Differences in The Don's Edition

I was a BIG fan of the PS2 version of this game. Recently, I purchased "The Don's Edition" version and I am about 12 hours into it.

Here are some things I'm noticing that are different, so far:

* I LOVE how EA made use of the SIAXIS controller. However, I feel that a little bit more could have been done with them (i.e. while driving - you could turn the controller like a steering wheel, rather than manipulating the left analog stick).

* The graphics look wonderful in HD: the texture on the buildings, in the faces of the primary characters in close-up, etc.

* The Favors - You can ride around town and complete special requests from people (you will not reap a direct monetary reward, but these do yield some great respect points).

* I have noticed a new training mission (with Clemenza near the beginning of the game)

* You will be called to the Corleone compound to defend it against attacks from rival families.

* When extorting business and taking over rackets, you may be asked to complete a side mission-like task for the proprieter or racketeer and in return, they will pay their tributes to you each week.

* The Crew options are AWESOME! You can hire a guy, or two guys from the Family to ride with you for a small fee, or if you have the capability, you can call in and entire gang of Corleones to help you take down some more difficult tasks (I have found that this is very helpful in taking down warehouses, in fact your crew will say, "Stay down boss, we'll handle this." and they'll attack the waves of gangsters coming at you while you extort the warehouse manager.

* I am noticing that the interaction with the cops is a lot different. Keeping a beat cop on the take isn't as effective as having one of the borough captains in your pocket (or... as you'll find out) by blackmailing him with a dirty little secret that you just happened to have found out.

* When you are in a safehouse, you can pick up the phone and call a driver to take you to another one of your safehouses. This comes in VERY handy for when you need to get to New Jersey from Brooklyn and don't feel like driving yourself. I like to use this when I get to a safehouse and I am trying escape some heat from the cops or a rival gang - after robbing a bank, or blowing up a compound, etc.

Well... that's about all I can think of for now. Mainly, it's the same game, but I think that all of the things that were changed made a game that already was fun, a lot more fun and it made a game that got to be very repetitive, a LOT less repetitive and more fresh and versatile. Nice job in working out the kinks EA. Can't wait to see how the game finishes up.

Any other observations?

That's also in the Black Hand Edition.

You are making the mistake of thinking you are more important than you actually are.

Bought a PS3 the other day and bought the Don's Edition to go with it. I love it. It's almost like a whole new game. Almost. Much more detail, lights, building textures, colors, WEATHER (the thunder and lightning storms sound excellent).

There are new, more creative ways to kill people. Every store, racket and such has an electric box now that you can throw your opponents into and fry them.

New vehicles, cars mostly, but also a gasoline truck! BIG EXPLOSION.

Two new levels so far, I've only driven Michael to the ship bound for Italy at this point. First new one, you personally rescue Tom Hagen at the abandoned diner. The second one, you bomb Solozzo's factory 3 times with Clemenza.

You can leave the Corleone Compound by a new route rather than just the offramp into Little Italy

Okay, I'm further in the game.

In addition to killing the heads of the other 4 families, you get to kill Moe Green! In a New York casino, not Las Vegas. It's kinda tacked on but it's still nice to have. Still nothing on Carlo Rizzi.

As the guy above me mentioned, the Compounds are different now, they don't all look like the Corleone Compound. The Tattalgia compound's exterior is a different design but both interiors are the same. At least one building in the other three compounds is identical to a Corleone interior but not both.

The New Jersey Stracci compound has an outdoor conservatory type thing and different landscape. Has a wine cellar in the basement which is cool. I think you have to go upstairs to bomb it rather than the basement.

The Hell's Kitchen Cuneo compound I found to be most difficult. It's also the most interesting. It's a construction site! Apparently Don Cuneo wanted to make an addition to one of his houses before his death and so one of the houses is half completed; the grounds are also being re-landscaped so you're walking on dirt, using cement blocks and brickstacks and other materials as as cover. Fun, and challenging. I had to hire a crew member to help me out. Doesn't help that your health doesn't improve at all. 2 or 3 shots with a shotgun and you're dead.

The Barzini compound is now fairly easy to defeat as opposed to it being the hardest in the original edition. Barzini must have been friends with Jack Woltz as the interior of one of his compounds is identical to Woltz's mansion. Nice to run around in now without being spotted by the guards.

Taking over some businesses, they too no longer have the same 3 layouts. Many of them still do but not all. One of them in Midtown next to Grand Central Station, you can go to the roof and actually fall off and die. Nice view of St. Patrick's Cathedral up there. I can't recall if the cathdral was in the original game.

Overall it's a more challenging game as your skill upgrades take MUCH longer to earn. I've defeated the compounds and half the businesses and but my health and speed have yet to improve, whereas all skills except infinite amo are there after the compounds are taken. But I'm enjoying it.

I really like the new building layouts. Some are similar, but the new compounds are fresh. I really liked the new Stracci hub (in the railroad yard).

I am 27 hours into the game and still have the Cuneos and Barzinis to take down. I love it!

I finished the game a couple months ago and I have a question. How do you hire an entire crew? I was only able to hire one guy at a time and when I'd go to other for-hire soliders they'd tell me to get lost. I couldn't hire more than one guy at a time. And this is when I was Boss.

I definitely could've used more than one guy for the Barzini Ship factory in Hell's Kitchen. Took me 15 frickin times.

There is that "Hit Squad" feature that you can activate. If you notice the Corleone crest (near your health meter) is burning with flame then you have that option. Access the weapon wheel and you will notice a family crest where the down button on the d-pad is. If you click it, you will have 7-8 members of the family show up and get your back.

From what I have found you can't "hire" them, you can only call them in when you earn hit squad points (which, I believe you simply accrue by doing gangster-esque things around town). And as I mentioned, you can call them in when you notice the flames engulfing your health meter crest.

If you go to the weapon wheel without having built up your hit squad meter, there will be no crest in the down button slot on the d-pad, hence no option for you to call in the reinforcements.

Otherwise, you can simply hire one guy at a time to be your shadow. My recommendation is to hire the most expensive guy you can. As you can only hire guys that are your inferior, their attributes are the closest to your own and the more respect points they have - the more effective they will be in battling enemies. The only drawback is, their fee is much higher!

Hiring a low-level enforcer to battle the Barzini family will not be very effective (as he won't take much damdage before being killed, nor will he possess very high-powered weapons, nor will he demonstrate the acumen to use them). Conversely, hiring a level 4 banger to battle some Tattaglias will be like taking candy from a baby!

Okie dokie, I played this game 3 or 4 times now. Forget what I said about your health not improving. Damn thing's on the next page of the skill upgrades. I forget if you can do this in the ps2 version but you can skip around and upgrade whatever the hell you want. Upgrade your health and gun firing ability first.
