Judy, Shake Me Up!

I haven't read the novel, but what exactly is Judy doing to Smallweed whenever he tells her to "shake him up?" I'm assuming he some kind of a disability that leaves him unable remain long in an upright position and when he begins to slide down he needs to be lifted up again to remain sitting, but what's with the shaking motions that seem to go with this? What exactly was Smallweed's disability?

reply

.
Well, he's some sort of cripple, and so his sitting like that all day must make his spine compressed and distorted, so the shaking acts like a sort of stretching, or chiropractic.

Smallweed's legs are paralysed. As he angrily shakes his fist etc. he slides down in his chair and periodically needs to be lifted upright again.
