similarites to Twilight

Is the Toda sensei in Hidden blade the same Toda sensei who taught Iguchi swordsmanship?

And is the Naota in this movie the same Naota that served Iguchi?

reply

Yes. To be frank the story is essentially the same. I's based on a series of novels by a japanese author Shuuhei Fujisawa. It's a story told two times with refinements. Repetition, the girl chanting the poems, the litany of Confucius. Repetition.

reply

yep, story like 85% the same :D

SIMILARITIES?

WHAT ISN'T DIFFERENT?

The "only" difference is the main character doen't have two daughters and this movie "stunk" compared to Twilight Samurai. . .

reply

what is different are the personalities of the main characters in twilight samurai and the hidden blade - seibei is quiet, modest and is being disrespected and controlled by higher authorities, but accepts this quietly, like a samurai. the hidden blade main character, is proud, dares to openly offend his masters and even kill one for an unjust action. he is not the classical samurai (one of the reasons he gives up his life as samurai at the end), which for me symbolizes the downfall of the samurai era. actually it is intended that the movies are that similiar i havent seen yamadas third samurai film, but i think that it too will follow a similiar pattern.
actually this film has partly the same themes as the last samurai, but shows them in a brilliant non-hollywood type of way.

# 1 - Quotation marks aren't a form of emphasis.

# 2 - It "stunk"? Just how? This is a beautiful film.

# 3 - When you say "What isn't different?" I think you mean "What IS different?"

I LOL'd.

I do agree with you although I don't think the hidden blade is a stinker, but Twilight Samurai is definitely superior. I think this one and the third one was just "Oh people like Samurai movie, let's make sequels with similar stories."

I came onto these boards specifically to look for this thread... because the two films are extremely similar.

Yes, they are very similar. So? Mozart's piano concertos are likewise somewhat similar, then - same instruments, same three movements. Should we only listen to one? I have several rose bushes in my garden - oh look, all that grows on them is roses, maybe I should root them all up except one?

When something is beautiful and pleasing, as Yamada-san's work is, I see no objection to a theme repeated with variations. Let's enjoy both.

Did i say it was a bad thing? No i didn't. Don't make assumptions. I didn't like this films very much actually, but thought Twilight Samurai was awesome... but at no point did i say there wasn't room for both.

Glad to hear it, Madluke. My remarks were really addressed to the charming person a few posts back who used the word 'stunk' in relation to this film. Yours is a rather more mature judgment and I can respect it, if not share it. How did you like Bushi no ichibun?

reply

I havn't seen it yet, although i am actually planning on it for in a couple of weeks time when i can watch it with a friend. Sounds great.

It's not a stinker but twilight is so much superior than this and the third installment which to me was average.
