Remake with Jennifer Garner

Warner Bros. has acquired remake rights to the 2004 Japanese hit Be With You, with Jennifer Garner starring and producing via her newly formed Vandalia Films banner, reports Variety. Garner and partner Juliana Janes will produce with the American Beauty team of Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen.

The original was directed by Nobuhiro Doi from a novel by Takuji Ichikawa. On her deathbed, a dying young woman tells her husband and young son that she will return to them. A year later, father and son happen upon a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the dead woman.

Alias star Garner recently wrapped Catch and Release, a romantic comedy for Columbia written and directed by Erin Brockovich scribe Susannah Grant.

You bet me to it. I was about to post it when i learnt about it. All i can say is that i will not watch the remake at all. :(

On the upside, the original will be out on R1 someday with English subtitle, hopefully soon.

Hmmm some how that brief description I just read reminded me of the movie "Birth" with Nicole Kidman.... is it just me?

And so it goes....

Why am I not surprised that another quality Asian remake script has been bought by the rich and powerful Americans.

reply

i can almost guarantee that this remake will be trash compare to the original 2004 one. First of all, this was written by a japanese person so naturally, all teh settings and the characters will be japanese. Now that warner bros, an american company is remaking it, they will have to westernize it and make it into american settings. I really dont see how this story could work when it gets americanized.

reply

Maybe because Asian movie makers have been ripping off western movies for years?

Seriously, the entire entertainment industry is incestuous. It happens on both sides of the Pacific. Hiroshima Mon Amour, La Femme Nakita, (BTW, also remade in Hollywood) Bewitched and Reservoir Dogs-just to name a few Japanese re-makes. I won't even start on Bollywood ripping off Hollywood.

Who cares? You act like something precious has been stolen from you. You don't own a movie just because you saw it in the original language. No one is forcing you to see the substandard remakes. But some Japanese remakes actually turn out decent. See The Happiness of the Katakuris & The Bad Sleep Well.

Give it a chance. Just because "Shall we Dance" sucked doesn't mean all American remakes will.

Odds are this movie probably will be lame, too. But at least its not based on another stupid Comic Book.

reply

I would like to congratulate your for your ignorance. Hiroshima Mon Amour is a japanese rip-off?!? Did you really say that? Do you know who Alain Resnais is? You just killed a part of me.

reply

Get the stick out of your butt & re-read my post.

reply

That's ok, they will ruin it anyway. The American giants have forgotten how to make truly emotional character driven movies. My preference is always for Asian or European movies, they are real.

reply

Who cares if they're remaking it? If anything, because of the remake, it will bring this movie to the awareness of the public. Perhaps even to the popularity of Ringu and Ju-On. Isn't that a good thing?

reply

no.

Maybe I'm a little odd, but I think it's a little disrespectful for the whole movie. The US version will bring us japanese story and ating in their boring and predictible way. If you saw remake of Ring you know what I mean.
I don't understand how japanese director allow this (greed?).

For same reasons I didn't (and I still don't wanna) saw other US remakes Ju-On. And they are planning to remake My Sassy Girl and Old-Boy also. Where is the anti-petition?

reply

there also remaking Il Mare :(

reply

Somehow, I have a feeling that a Hollywood remake might turn out really trashy and do the original very little justice. One of the main issues that come to mind is that I wouldn't find the personalities of the characters believable in an American context.

reply

Why is it ok for the Japanese to make a movie based on someone's story, and the American's can't on the same story. It's like Oldboy wasn't Korean why are people complaining. No one complained how the Koreans did the Ring. I mean really, there's nothing in this movie that can't translate well. And did someone say the American version will be predictable, well of course it'll be predictable, you've probably seen the movie and its tacted on twist.

This is possibly one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, but give the American one a chance.

Go complain about the Argentinian Battle Royale or something.

reply

I dunno. I guess I don't really mind remakes if they're done well enough. I kinda liked both Ringu and The Ring.

But it is becoming really annoying each time you hear/see a really good movie that's fairly new, and the next day read about a Hollywood remake already in the making. Why don't they just show the original if they think it is so good that it deserves a remake? Do foreign movies with subtitles not do well in US cinemas?

Yeah other countries do it too but they dont remake everything in sight. Maybe it's because Hollywood is such a global name that ppl are making such a big fuss..

personally i don't think jennifer garner suits to play this role. her tough image from alias conflicts heaps with the role in "be with you" story.

My sentiments exactly. I cringe every time she tries acting out a dramatic scene in "Alias".

As long as Americans continue to hate subtitled non-English movies, there is a demand for studios to remake foreign movies into English.

reply

Jennifer won a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and 5 straight nominations to the Emmys.
So you should have a real watch before saying she can't act dramatically.

Here are just two videos I found:

If the remake is bad.. it's certainly not because of Jennifer Garner.

reply

its not like she can't act. Its just she doesn't suit the role. Not only is her personality way off, her appearance is to.

reply

I want it to stay gold.
There's no need to remake a golden story.

reply

I think we should just be grateful that the originals exist and that we have access to them. Whether they make remakes or not doesn't take any of the quality away from the originals and nothing forces us to see them. One good thing is that it can bring publicity to the originals as somebody said, but the flip side is that a lot of people who see remakes give credits to the director of the remake as if it was his orginal work, so as long as there is a real effort to promote the originals I think it's fine...

God doesn't judge movies for us, so who do you think you are?

reply

wow.
i wont watch it either;
it'll ruin the good-ness of the original movie...
<3 this movie is love.
