the filmmaker pedro almodovar is gay and he likes to push the boundaries on gender stereotypes. Augustina did look a bit like a lesbian (although it's not fair to say that she was one simply because she sort of looked like one) and I liked how it was kept a bit ambiguous. When my friend and I watched the movie together, she pointed out that Augustina might've been a lesbian b/c her mother was a hippie and probably raised her on socially/morally liberal attitudes. But when I first saw her, she just looked like a cancer patient, far before it was actually revealed that she had cancer (short hair, sickly pallor, smoking what might've been medically justified marijuana).
