Superb performances

I think this is Almodovar's finest film !
Much of its success is due to his great script writing, and the fine performances of all the actresses in the film.
Carmen Maura has been one of Europe's finest actors for many years and she delivers another great performance for Almodovar.
Penelope Cruz demonstates how much better she performs in her Spanish tongue with Almodovar's familiar script style, than in her English / Hollywood films. Her performance is superb in Volver.
Lola Duenas, Blanca Portillo and Yohana Cobo provide great supporting performances.

I agree. I'd written penelope Cruz off as a pretty face with limited talent, but her performances in Volver and Vicky Cristina Barcelona show's what she's capable of if he's given good material and a great character to work with.

Penelope Cruz was nominated for an Oscar for this movie right? Um, WHY?! I'm sorry but I don't think her performance was all that great. It was good, yes, and moving and versatile but not Best Actress worthy. Honestly, I think Lola Duenas as Soledad was much better.

Just my opinion of course.

Not familiar with Almodovar but I agree with everything else you said 100%

Stereotyped, patronizing and painful. Just my opinion, totally unworthy of the rating given it

Penelope Cruz gave a knockout, lovable performance.
All of the ladies were indeed genuine and likable.
It made the story how well the cast portrayed their characters.

When I first watched this as a young boy (I was 13) I thought Cruz's performance was one of the best I had ever seen and when I knew she was nominated for an Oscar I cheered for her like an hooligan. Soon after I discovered Asian cinema, underground artsy 60's-70's films and my tastes changed, but I never forgot how this performance made me feel. It's one of my favourite performances ever.
