For thinking gamers

I recently had a friend bring over his Wii, and was exposed to both Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda Twilight Princess. Now this is going to sound a bit unfair since I haven't taken on and completed either game, but nonetheless I was underwhelmed. I couldn't figure it out: both had all the ingredients. I got to thinking, and the nearest I got to a conclusion was that, while lavishly decorated and technologically advanced, these titles don't bring anything new to the table.

I think you may be right. Twilight Princess is in many ways a rehash of Ocarina of Time and A Link To The Past. Give it a chance though, it is definitely a refinement of that formula. The gameplay is some of the smoothest in any Zelda title, from swordfighting to horseback riding to archery, and on and on. The dungeouns are great too. Mostly nothing groundbreaking, just really really really tight game design. There are some extremely likeable characters there too, especially Links childhood friends from Ordon village. It may not top Ocarina, but I think after the backlash Nintendo got from Wind Waker they decided to basically make this one "fan service".

Now Mario Galaxy is a little different. The controls may be simple and reminiscent of Mario 64 / Sunshine, but the level designs are just mind bogglingly good. It's just non-stop creativity from start to finish. On top of that you have the amazing music and the phenomenal art, this game is pure unadulterated joy. It's hard to say that it's "bringing something new to the table", but did Super Mario World (SNES)? I don't know about you but that game is one of my favorites of all time, not for some abstract reason, just because it makes me happy to play it. Mario Galaxy feels like that again.

The Wii is certainly no N64, Nintendo isn't dropping game-changers left and right. These days it seems like they're catering only to the casual gamer and the old nostalgic crowd. They're still masters of the craft though. When they put in the time and money the can just keep cranking out pure gaming gold.

They don't bring anything new? WRONG O! No Zelda game before this had the option of becoming an animal with enhanced senses of creatures that can only be seen in twilight.
