How did Franky*spoilers*

How did Frankie Muniz survive at the end. I swore he died, he got chased by that lady into a ditch where there were are bunch of flowers. Then later the two remaining walk there and thank him for sacrificing himself. Then at the end the three of them just walk away, it confused the hell out of me. I'm I mistaken or was this a plot hole?

Yeah, like i got that part....but when Hutch and Abigail find Swink's laptop, it says Game Over. Why would it say that if he really didn't get killed? That's always bugged me and me and my friend can't figure it out...

"Oh, sh*t yeah!"

reply

It says "Game Over" so the audience will think he's dead.

reply

Actually the movie died long before that.

reply

No, the game said to make Hutch & Abigail feel even crappier

reply

Well a scene acknowledging this event would have been nice. Like "hey guys I'm alive I feel in some rose bushes so she couldn't kill me.
"cool, thanks for the plot filler."
Simple *beep* conversation that they decided to leave out.

reply

Well if you remember, in the game, evil is stopped by roses too.

reply

Yea I remember that, but I hate when movies trick you lol. Because when I saw that scene I'm like what the hell is up with that, the roses didn't protect him? Oh well, they sure fooled me.

reply

That was a big wuestion for me too. Number one, I think I missed where it said WHY it stopped her (unless it was one of those things you just acce[t), number 2 when it said game over, I was like "I'll be, I guess it didn't work." Then he's back and it's like, it did, but it still said Game Over, WTF? I think we all get that the roses protected him, but what we want to know is, why did it say GAME OVER?

Karen, if you see Jesus, tell him to take the gerbil babies! They're Christians!

reply

because in the game he did die... like all the others... they died in the game first then in real life (the first few people died several hours after they died in the game). but he managed to save himself with the rose stems which she couldn't cross because ghosts can not cross the stem of a rose.

reply

I know this is old but October said in the movie "the undead can't cross the twig of a wild rose." It probably said game over because he was literally caught up in a bush of wild roses instead of him purposely holding out a rose to get rid of her. The game over screen was to throw the audience off.

reply

i totally see where your coming from on being confused. i thought when he fell in the rose bush he would be saved. and then when it said Game Over i was like "do they have to be CUT roses or something?" but then he popped up at the end alive but he technically died in the game.

but then i think the rose bush wasn't IN the game. the creator forgot it or something...so in the game he DIDN'T fall into a rose bush-hence he dies. but in real life- he survived.

i think.

reply

Something everyone is missing is that fact that the "game" cheats. The carriage started chasing Swink in the real world, before he died in the game. He even yells out, "I'm not dead, that's cheating" or something like that. So for the ghost to have the screen say, "Game Over" isn't that hard to believe.

reply

Yeah, it's cheating the viewer. Maybe he died in the game before he fell into the ditch, so in the game he was dead, but the bitch couldn't get to him. So the game showed he was dead (as it did with all the players who died, even if they weren't dead IRL yet), assuming that the witch would get to him in due time.

"It says "Game Over" so the audience will think he's dead."

Lies are unforgivable in screenwriting. It's one thing to mislead the audience through clever misdirection, it's an outright insult to lie to them. Saw did the same thing.

I hate crap like this.

reply

It did not lie. It wasn't something just thrown in there to trick you (okay technically it was but there was reasoning behind it). You all know they are roses because you seem him climb into the bush in real life. Pay attention at the game over screen. There were no roses on that bush. The programmer didn't program them into the game right there. In the game he fell into a bush and thus she got him. In real life they were roses and she couldn't touch him. So in the game she got him but she couldn't in real life following that.

reply

That's what we call a convolusion. In other words -- it's a lie.

My opinions are stronger than your facts.

Whether or not VIEWERS figured out he was alive, I do think the movie needed a scene in which the CHARACTERS realized he was alive--or showed that they always knew. It's made to seem like they think he died. So at the end, they could have walked over to his body in the rose bush and been all "OMG You're ALIVE!" then lifted him out of the roses, given him the chance to deliver some cheesy happy ending one-liner, and THEN shown the 3 of them walking off together. Seriously, just having him appear in the final moment was jarring after he'd been dropped from focus for the entire final battle sequence.

reply

It wasn't very clear at all.

reply

That would've been an absolute cliche bore. It's not necessary. ESPECIALLY in horror movies. Having him appear in the final moments after the game over screen was the best idea possible. Just because some people couldn't see everything doesn't mean it's unclear. He was literally in a bush of roses. They said in the film that the undead can't cross the twig of a wild rose. Roses were used to stay alive in both the game and in real life. Even in the game he was "dead" in a bush of flowers. I don't see how much clearer it could get.

reply

For the 1 millionth time, he fell into roses. Bitch couldn't touch him.
Too bad they couldn't have just taken three seconds of precious film to explain that huh? My guess is that you'll have to answer this question quite a few more times because the writer's of this movie don't know how to write a movie.

Jesus H the rose thing and it's significance regarding spirits is visited on at least 5 separate occasions during the story. When he fell into the rose bush if that didn't at least leave the possibility open for the fact the Swink could still be alive then you're a moron. Why does everything have to be spelled out? Some people actually enjoy having to use their heads to infer things that have been subtly mentioned previously in the plot. If you need every little last detail spelled out for you so you know what will happen at every turn go watch, I dunno, Barney and friends. Leave the brainbusters to us intelligent folk.

reply

It was pretty damn obvious he was alive. I was actually expecting to come on here and see people complain about how obvious they made that 'twist' ... but then I forget how stupid people are every day of my life.

You're saying exactly what I've been thinking while reading this thread. How much clearer could they have made him being alive??? Seriously. Some people clearly have to be spoonfed word for word explanations in the movie to understand this. Jesus.

reply

GOD FORBID the movie doesn't leave a question unanswered. Stay Alive isn't going to hold your hand and explain every little detail to you. It wants you to answer things yourself.

Like the ending. Will the game still kill the player? Or is the curse broken?

The movie is almost TELLING you: Decide for yourself.

reply

My friend had a pretty reasonable explanation for this. Swink tumbled into a bush of wild roses, and as was mentioned earlier, ghosts can't cross the stem of a rose. The game followed this rule (which was apparently supposed to be based off of real folklore, as October seemed to display some recognition of the concept; I'd never heard of it, but oh well), BUT, in the game you only ever see single roses tossed at the enemies. My friend's theory was that the AI for the game's version of Bathory wasn't intelligent enough to realize that the rose bush would protect Swink; but the real ghost of Elizabeth Bathory was deterred by the actual roses.

*shrug* I'll buy it. Otherwise the incident doesn't make a shred of sense.

reply

he used cheats

reply

[deleted]

You'll notice it said "Game Over" but unlike with the other deaths there was no body. Essentially Swink escaped the game by getting into a place where she could not follow. As far as why she doesn't like the roses, October states that when they first start playing. "The undead can't cross the twig of a wild rose." Twig meaning stem.

reply

It does follow the game rules. Every time a character died, they first died in the game, and it said Game Over even though they weren't still dead in real life. So he died in the game, but not in RL.

What didn't follow the game rules, though, was Elizabeth starting to chase Swink (and October's brother) before they'd died. Obviously Lizbeth is a cheat.

swink dying in the game an not in real life had nothing to do with "lizabeth" and her supposed "cheating". the game is a horror survival, and what are horror survivals about? getting chased or hunted by whatever ghosts zombies or even freaky 18th century chicks. she was just chasing swink just as she did in the game and swink died in the game and not real life coz there was roses on the bushes in real life and NOT in the game. its as simple as that. they show you pictures of both and you can plainly see that in the game there is NO roses on the bush. just as in the game the gate to the cemetery was NOT covered in vines and the one in real life was. its just to do with ho the house looked in the olden days as opposed to now Eg, electicity instead of candles, modern artwork over the fireplace and the vines that would have taken years to grow and the roses which would have taken years to grow too

swink was saved by the roses, cyber-swink wasnt so lucky its as simple as that.

in the game the bush didnt have roses. it would have to do with the grown and stuff. in real life the bush had roses but in the game i didnt see ANY in the bush

reply

He hacked that sh!t with a bush.

reply

My view of it was in the game the rose bushes weren't there but in real life they were. Therefore he didn't die in real life because of the roses.

reply

I have to say that I agree with everyone that said there wasn't a bush in the game but in real life the roses were there. Makes sense

there was a bush in the game but just no roses but yeah. its the obvious choice

he died purposely in the game to draw Elizabeth away from the two in the house - buying them time. he then jumped in the rose bush so when she came for him she couldn't get him, all the time the other two were closer to where they needed to be

reply

HE DIED IN THE GAME COZ THE BUSH DIDNT HAVE ANY ROSES!!!!! GEEZ as it is seen in the game he is alive when he runs into away from the van.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1157641/

reply

another way to put it is that he couldn't play anymore because he had the rose bush stuck on him so he didn't die and the game couldn't kill him. he was stuck in between where he gets out he dies and he stays in the game can't kill him so the game just locked him out of winning anyway for using a 'cheat' but the other possibility (dies in game, not real life) seems much less complicated than my idea of the GAME OVER situation...

Hi, we need more artists in this world. So get up and draw or write or act in a play!

reply

OR he died in the game coz the rose bush didnt have roses and the one in real life did. watch it again. its right in front of you.

What pisses me most of, that the two just show up out of nowhere and there is not a word of "Glad you two are still alive" etc ... just that stupid store end scene *sighs*

At first I thought wait, there are roses, why is there game over, but then again movies are often illogical, so it was a nice surprise to see him. I can enjoy stuff much more when the supernatural creatues stick to their rules. As opposed to the writers just breaking them to get another body in the bag.

"Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?" - "Because it's dull, you twit, it'll hurt more"

reply

yeah i hate that too. when they dont have an explaination about something and yeah. the end scene sucked. but it was better than if they were like walking away from the house and they were like "Glad That's Over" then this kid walked past with the game in his hands after just having bought it. THAT would have been worse.its like your basic horror ending

reply

Very simple explanation...Game glitch. I get them all the time in video games. I guess it was trying to be technology realistic lol.

I'm a girl. Shh

reply

OH, MY GOD. if i have to explain this one more time, i'm going to kill you all. In the game he has NO ROSES. so when he falls into the bush there is nothing to save him, IN REAL LIFE he has no roses but the bush HAS roses, DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR SHE CAN'T CROSS ROSES SO SEEING AS THE BUSH HAS ROSES HE DIDNT DIE!!!!! THE GAME WASNT LYING! THERE WAS NO GLITCH! WATCH THE END OF THE MOVIE AGAIN.

BUSH IN THE GAME: no roses
BUSH IN REAL LIFE: roses!

END OF DISCUSSION!!!!! geez
