I'm afraid I wasn't granted the privilage of being freaked out by this. Probably cause I knew the tricks that play on the human mind before hand, rather interesting stuff. Once you see individual parts the sum isn't really scary at all, It's techniques have been long used in horror film making. Here's what I think made this film scary for most.
The video quality at the beginning is hideously gainy and poor, It's more of what's not revealed then what is, lends even more to the unknown which is the ultimate fear in man. As well as lacking detail on the face, it makes the face look even more contorted and inhuman the way his mouth is moved.
The video has a very documentarish feel to it, documentaries give off the impression of realism, and real things are what scare people.
The sound is very amateurish, hearing backround clatter and sounds, having a very unfiltered track. Though the mutant's voice is easy to tell it's simply sped up and superimposed on the track. As well as having a very babyish way of talking, As well as the odd animal like sounds when it finally has a tantrum. Again a play on our senses.
The night-vision has an interesting quality to it, The it makes the retinas reflect the light back and thus seems to make the eyes seemingly blank as well as having a flourescant quality to them.
The right amount of human resemblence is there. We see someone with a generally human face, but with a huge cranium. If it looked totally alien it wouldn't look nearly as scary, I'm sure most of us have seen Alien, Predator, and the like. Yet this wasn't as scary to them, cause the appearance was very unhuman like. However someone deformed this severely scares us for the reason that we're a memeber of the same species and imagining ourselves in his place.
The camera angles also play a part of this, often used in horror films. Close ups, oddly paced cuts gives the sense of disorientation which in turn invokes fear as well. Especially when the mutant seems to freak out and turn rather violent.
With today's technology, filming an alien wouldn't be done in night-vision nor would the video image be that poor in quality. especially appearing on sites like Ebaum's world and the like, authenticity not being their strong points. But the film does a good job playing on the senses as well as film making techniques to scare it's audience. much like magic tricks, It's a all a question of misdirection and playing with the senses.
