Took the film out thinking it was the original (thus by accident)

I was surprised to see that it was a remake (didn't know they made one fairly recently). To me what wrecked it was the new elements like explaining where the asylum employees thought Caligari had been during his absence. It was a delusion of Francis ----there was no reason to explain that.

Except we aren't living a delusion of Francis; we're watching a movie. And for things to make sense we need to have some explanation of things that occur. If you don't know the ending yet it only makes sense that you'd wonder what the employees are thinking.

I honestly think you missed the understanding of what occurred in the film. Francis was telling this to his elderly companion; to say "there was no reason to explain that" is ignoring the fact that this is a framing device and thus there IS a reason to explain it.

On the other hand it is only a movie. And when does a delusion have to make that much sense anyway.Besides the total lack of explanation could have hinted it was a delusion. You miss the point!
