Really? That sucks if that is more than just an opinion, because I love Suzuki. Everything of his on R1 DVD is amazing.

reply

It is brilliant. Don't look for messages. Just look at Suzuki having fun mixing kabuki with musical and everything else. Pure fun :)

You are right, that is the way to approach this movie. I did, and I had a whale of a time. I laughed and smiled a lot watching it.

Escapism*) at its best

*) Nothing wrong with that

Absolutely amazing to look at! The songs, the use of color and the costumes all blend well with Suzuki's fractured storytelling. I loved it! It's Fun AND Funny!! Zhang Ziyi looks fantastic as well! ENJOY!

it's a wonderful movie in a weird kind of way.
I love it cos it's different..

I enjoyed "Operetta Tanuki Goten" very much when I saw it at Seattle Int'l Film Festival. However, to disagree slightly with some other posters, I do think that there are some messages to be found in this movie, though they're communicated on about the same level as they would be in any other fairy tale or fable. For example, I don't think it's incidental that Amechiyu's family is Christianized/Westernized in contrast with the traditionally Shinto-oriented tanuki tribe. There are some messages embedded in the story, but I would still agree that this film is first and foremost a fun and entertaining romp through Suzuki Seijun's fertile imagination.

LOL. I love you already.

This film infuriated and entertained me in equal measure. I thought some of the ideas and songs were hilarious but baffling.

Odd. Very, very odd.

I love Japanese cinema, but I fell asleep. Twice. And so did the projectionist, seemingly.
The subtitles vanished beneath the screen and the top edge of the film was visible. Nobody really wanted to get up and ask him to fix it, so for about five minutes all six members of the audience sat there bewildered, until finally someone knocked on the projection room door.

It was a sweet film, with some wonderful ideas, but it dragged a little.

I'm so glad that i've the same feeling wth you!The movie is full of imagination. How can a movie be made like this,it's very inspiring for me.It's a unconventional movie!

sweeeeeeet indeed. just saw it and wow. the racoon palace is paradise. suzuki is what like 82? and this film has the life of classic fellini. just bursting with color and joy and life. nearly perfect.

i just got done watching it for the 1st time on the Hong Kong R0 DVD. i don't know how i feel about it. i've never seen a movie by this director before, so i do not know anything about his personal style. i was entertained for a lot of it, mainly because i am a fan of Ziyi, but i was also lost for a lot of it! i guess it takes some getting used to. i will have to view this film again, and with a lighter spirit. i just got done watching "In The Mood for Love" and "2046" and somehow, this movie did not sit well right after the mood Wong Kar Wai set with his films.

I, too, must concur with the OP as to this film's sweeeeetness.
