I'd have to disagree with most here completely. Just because it isn't packed with revenge, demonic dna, assassins crawling all over the place, and family members using every opportunity to try and bash each other's brains, doesn't mean a story is automatically boring. Lots of action isn't a prequisite for a good storyline. I'm not saying the other stories are bad, on the contrary, I like most (if not all) of them. But I must say I find it kind of refreshing to have a bit of a calmer storyline with someone actually fighting for a noble cause (yes, old King did so too, but, well, he's dead now), inbetween all the extremely explosive and action packed stories, overflowing with revenge and bloodlust (which of course can be fun too, but that's not my point now).
Her motives for fighting are constantly the same? Sure, but hey, the girl holds on to her ideals, which are good ones in my book. Nothing wrong with that. And just look at the other characters, especially the Kazama's and Mishima's. Notice some continuity here? ;) As for her apparent stereotyping. It might be there, but hers isn't really that thick. And people, please... Which fighting game DOESN'T use stereotyping? Honestly: look at King, Jin, Lei, Nina, respectively portraying the tough pro-wrestler, the cool quiet karate using protagonist, the drunken master, and the femme fatale, all character types present in most fighting games. And don't even get me started on the obligatory dark masked/hooded ninja presence everywhere (though, granted, Yoshimitsu is somewhat of an exception to that stereotype)! Either complain about them all, or don't complain at all.
Overall, I really like Julia. In fact, she's my favorite character, fighting-wise, as well as story- and character-wise and her outlook on life has actually greatly inspired my own. Constant reasons for fighting? Stereotyped? So what?! She's a well worked out character (especially for one not in the game's main story line) and one of the few I can actually sympathize with. Plus, in my honest opinion, she's the most beautiful character in the game. :) Yeah, so I find a game character beautiful. Bite me!
Now, in case you're wondering (and of course you are, it's about me! :P); why is this guy such a nutcase taking so much time to defend a mere video game character? Well, apart from the aforementioned reasons why I like her, it's because she greatly reminds me of a very dear friend of mine, also named Julia and with a similar personality, whom I lost a few years ago, and that makes this character kind of special to me. And if anyone doesn't believe me and/or thinks I'm being emo or whatever lame thing you might think of, hey, whatever...
Ok, that was my mouthful of two cents. ^_^
