Americans a bit clueless about soccer sorry!

I’m not going to get into it to much and this is only one thing of the many things that’s different between American soccer and European football I have an issue with in this film but I’m pretty sure you can’t punch someone whilst playing soccer and get away with it, its not frickin ice hockey it’s a gentlemen’s sport play by hooligans(modern Englisg quote} theres such a thing as fouls and red cards and violence on the pitch is frowned upon off the pitch well that’s another story altogether.

I don't know that it's Americans so much as it is Hollywood and idiots who don't know how the game's played.

Iam a American soccer player and trust me I feel the same way ( about the red card that should have been given out). In the last scene of the movie there are many things they shouldnt have gotten away with: 1. The dude kicked the ball while he was on the ground ( illegal) 2. HE slide tackled her ( illeagal)
3. You cant push a player from behinde ( ilegal). As a soccer player I thought this movie stunk!

in case you hadn't noticed, this argument is already in progress...

Sorry when did it become illegal to slide tackle ? I know its been a few years since i played for the city, and i was a goalie, but as long as you(or me as a goalie) go for the ball u can pretty much do anything. I have slide tackled, broken a girls leg but going for the ball and nothing happened other then her leaving the game. Then again it could be different for the goalie since as long as i tackle the ball i can take out another play. ie hit there legs and flip them over my body, or with a slide tackle. Neways when did it become illegal?

Just to add on to angelstarprincess, you can also play on the ground. There is not rule that says you can't, trust me I'm a ref. It would be called if the ref considered to be was dangerous play (ie the ball is by the players head, the player on the ground kicks someone)
P.S. I'm not defending the movie, just the rules of the game. The movie was terrible(but that's another story)

There is indeed no rule about slide tackling. However, there isn't any rule about high kicking either. Both are under 'dangerous play' and is solely up to the interpretation of the referee. As a referee, I am instructed to call it if I see intent to injure (ie, going for the legs and not the ball).

However, unlike the poster before me there is a specific rule that states that you can't kick the ball while on the ground. It still fits under 'dangerous play' but it is actually stated. In fact, I've given yellow cards for it.

I just read Law 12 (which is Fouls and Misconduct) in the 2007/2008 USSF Law Book and I was just wondering where the law is that says you can't play the ball on the ground. I agree it fits under dangerous play if it is really dangerous. Just becasue someone plays the ball on the ground doesn't make it dangerous. I apologise if it is really in the law book but I can't seem to find it.

I play soccer for a high school team and have played for over 10 years. When ever i have slidetackled someone i have gotten a card.

I think the whole slide tackle issue only came into being over the last several years, in the Premiership anyway. Back in the 70's it wasn't frowned upon like it is nowadays. Back in the 80's and even 90's pro players could do it and get away with it as long as they took the ball before the player. Now, (Most) refs don't care whether you get the ball or not as it's a very dangerous play - kinda like drink driving, you don't need to hit someone to get punished. Loved the movie by the way (England & Arsenal fan).

reply

I assumed they didn't call it on purpose because of the whole aspect of a girl playing with the boys... they wanted her out.

reply

In all european games I watched, you can slide tackle as long as you hit the ball and it's not considered dangerous play, also you can NEVER slide tackle from behind the player that gives an automatic yellow (sometimes very orange) card, since it is obviously greatly dangerous play.

reply

You can slide tackle if you win only the ball and don't touch the player, or win the ball first and then the player falls over your leg.

However you can't hack through the player's leg and the ball, even if you win the ball first. That should be an automatic red card, in my opinion.

Also, there used to be a rule about playing the ball while prone, meaning a player lying on the ground should not attempt to play the ball when an opponent is competing for the ball. This rule was often enforced in kids matches, but you rarely see it called in professional matches.

I think because she was a girl and wanted to do something what wasn't thought to be girlish enough, something what most people thought would be madness or unproper, she was tested, really hard. Probably they didn't want to hurt her intentionally very bad but just to show her that she is a girl, "a joke in men's game".

Why ref didn't give cards dunno. Maybe he was in shock and dilemma too because a girl playing with the boys, how to judge equally, "girls are weaker!"? Maybe he just didn't see it.

And well, the movie wasn't depicting modern-day football?
