Ending was a fail.

Spoilers!

The movie was a light hearted comedy/suspense and then it turns into some sad dramatic story? The loss of Andy Lau's character was pointless and there was no reason to subject the audience to that. If there is meaning in killing off the main character (and don't give me some "he finally realized he had to sacrifice X to gain Y" cliche bs) then fine but it was a "let's try to make this movie an award winner" move and it was just such a fail. The rest of the movie was good but it was so confusing and disjointed when the movie just changes moods for the last five minutes. And then with the praying at the end leading in to the sad music -ugh I almost threw up. Again though, everything else about this movie was fine - it was your typical Andy Lau romance/action.

I also wonder why Uncle Bill did NOT take the money when he had just killed Andy Lau (???)

I'm guessing while he was dying, Wang held onto the bag and wouldn't let it go. Uncle Lee decided to screw it, since he needed time to change into he old man make-up to escape the police.

Then Wang gives the money back with his last dying breath.

PS. I agree with the OP, I was hoping for Andy Lau to not die at the end
