Just watched it and...

I rented the movie yesterday and just watched it today and...I actually liked it. I basically rented it to see Gina Gershon, because I'm a big fan of hers. I had read all of the "this movie sucks" posts here, had read plenty of bad reviews, and I was expecting a complete dump of a movie, so I was surprised to find myself enjoying it. It reminded me more of a stage production than a movie and I'm really into theater, so it was fun to watch. I can understand why some people wouldn't like it, because I know that type of thing isn't everyone's cup of tea. It was different than a lot of the movies I've seen lately and I like the variety.

Now, bring on the "you're an idiot, this movie was crap, blah, blah you must work for Big Sky" comments that apparently everyone who liked the movie gets...

Hello there, I'm a Matthew Lillard fan and like you, also run a fan community on LJ and a fledgling fan site.
I'm glad to hear that you managed to enjoy the film on its own merits and from the perspective of a Gina fan, I look forward to doing the same as a Matt fan. Have you seen the cute pic of them from Gina's website or myspace?

I love Matthew Lillard, too. If you'd like, I can link your fan community in the info for the one I run for Gina? And yeah, I have seen it, I think it's cute.

I finally got hold of a DVD and I enjoyed the main reason I watched it, Matthew. His scenes with Gina were great. Some characters and scenes could have been trimmed or cut out completely. I enjoyed the dialogue and the way that it was more grown up than a lot of films I'd seen for a long time. I liked the behind the scenes documentary on the DVD and the outtakes on the credits.

I'm glad you finally got to see it. So you like the later scenes with Matthew better than his earlier rants? Do you think that was about a change in filming styles or because the characters were getting back into a "comfort zone" instead of being so caught up in their frustrations so that you felt more comfortable around them?

reply

I loved some of the earlier rants as they just made me laugh, "yo, yo yo it's not an artichoke!"
Some of the dialogue is very sharp and just plain different than what you would expect from a movie nowadays. I liked the evolution of Sal through the evening, he comes in, you get what you see, but then he opens up a little and there's more sides to him. It's also interesting to contrast his opinion about himself with the girls in the bathroom. But yes, a "comfort zone" definitely, some of the rants were a bit too spiky and you weren't sure why you should like his character, if at all but you can see his insecurities come into play, especially when he asks Tom in the kitchen not to go. Not to go chasing after his girlfriend for sure, but also because he's nervous about being alone with Rachel? The change in filming style is interesting if they tried to tie it up a little too neatly by having everyone pair off.

The whole Wayne/Anne Hache scene seemed pointless really and added nothing to the film, in fact I thought the Anne Heche character could have been cut out easily. But that's just me, I think I'll watch the film a couple more times to get a real idea of how I feel for the whole film rather than just seeing Matthew in a new role.

I liked Mars' character but wasn't sure he was the best choice to play him, he acted well and I enjoyed his performance but I just kept being really aware that he was the director and sort of using his part to help cue the other actors, too much of him listening to/watching the other characters really made me aware that he was a director, and serving a dual purpose in the scenes, if that makes sense?

Just saw this movie yesterday and I loved it! I thought is was witty, smart, and very entertaining. I could definitely see why some people wouldn't get it. It is set like a play and relys heavily on the STORY AND the intricate RELATIONSHIPS among the characters.

When I initially saw the trailer I was not interested however, I was up, nothing else was on, so I figured "Why the hell not!"

To my surpise I loved it! A very underrated movie.

Unfortunately movies without special effects, killings, blood and guts, elaborate sets, exotic locations, huge costume design and wardrobe departments, - Which I love too! - don't usually go over well.

I actually just caught part of this movie on tv tonight and from what I saw it was pretty good. I got the DVR set to record it in its entirety so I can check it out

Where did you see it on TV?

it must have been on a movie channel like Showtime I think, perhaps encore. I know it wasn't on regular TV because all the language was still involved *chuckles* so most defiantly a movie channel
