reply

Absolutely! "Mormon" is really only a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

reply

Yes, they do celebrate Christmas, as sendtothisone stated.

reply

Yes, Mormons celebrate Christmas. It's the Johovah's Witnesses that don't celebrate anything due to their belief in all holidays being based off of Pagan rituals. How they believe that The Savior's birth is Pagan, I'll never figure that out.

reply

They don't believe the birth of Jesus is Pagan. It's the celebration of that birth on Dec 25 that they believe is based on older Pagan rituals. There is a lot of evidence to back up their point, and even most Christain's and Mormons don't believe that Jesus was actually born in December.

I've never heard that. Where did you hear that at? Of course we believe Jesus was born in December.

Mormons is not a nickname. People call them like that because thay think it's not a real Jesus church.

That's not why people call us Mormon. We call ourselves Mormon. It is a nickname, and nothing more.

I'm a mormon, and it is true that we believe Christ was not born in December. We believe He was born April 6th. As was mentioned, many christians and Bible scholars believe He was born in the spring. Here is a quote from one of the former presidents of our church:

"This is the annual conference of the Church. April 6, 1973, is a particularly significant date because it commemorates not only the anniversary of the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this dispensation, but also the anniversary of the birth of the Savior, our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ."
(Harold B. Lee, “Strengthen the Stakes of Zion,” Ensign, July 1973, 2)

Also, "mormons" is a nickname like the prior posters have stated. People started calling us that soon after "The Book of Mormon" of published. It's a book of scripture we teach from and study.

I agree with se214

Mormons believe that Christ was born in the Spring. Two reasons for this. The star the wise men followed is more likely to have been Jupiter. In the middle east, jupiter is visible in the sky for a few days every spring. For the middle eastern people, following jupiter or 'the star' was like a pilgrimage.

Also, the shepherds who visited Jesus at his birth. One of them gave him a lamb didn't they? Some one please remind me, what time of year are lambs born?

Rest my case :)

Well, I guess I didn't get to read the posts you are referring to, if they were deleted. They must have been offensive in some manner for the administrator to delete them. They won't delete posts unless it's a legitimate complaint, and something is indeed determined to be offensible. If you'd like you can send me a private message, and we can discuss the "informations" that you have about the LDS church. I'd be happy to converse with you about it.

Probably heard it in church....or the scriptures....or General Conference.

Question: To be a "Utah Mormon" do you just have to be of LDS decent and live in Utah, or do you have to be practicing?

reply

I know they don't celebrate his birthday. It's just a surprise because I was just sayin that they treat him like he's the most important out of everybody. During sacrament, it's either him they talk about or the lovely Bishop of the church! . . .

They don't celebrate Joseph Smith's birthday (December 23rd by the way). They are too busy celebrating Christmas. And every church talk given (even those about Smith or the lovely Bishop) are ended "in the name of Jesus Christ."

"It's just a surprise because I was just sayin that they treat him like he's the most important out of everybody"

He is extremely important to us. He's the one who got the revalation from God to start the church, so yes, we do honor and revear him as the founder of our church, similar to how you would honor and revear George Washington for being one of the creators of the United States.

And we have quite a few more discussions other than him, and I don't think I've ever really heard someone talk about the bishop. I've heard talks about everything from God's love to Repenting, to temple marriages, to His plan for us. A lot of those will have quotes from Joseph Smith, but that's because he was one of the first to get information about it. Along side those quotes though will most likely be a scripture (a lot of the time from the bible most christians use) or a quote from someone else as well.

I'm just sayin. Why do people see oh, somebody wrote a book, so it's automatically true! People never make things up! It sounds like a load of crap. It sounds fake. I used to be mormon, but now I choose not to be. It's the same as the bible. There's too much magical impossible stuff in there, it's just hard to believe. Some people are so gullible.
The only reason you believe it, is because people told you your whole life everything they teach is true. It's called being brainwashed.
To me, all religion is just being brainwashed. But everybody's allowed to their own beliefs.
I believe there is something bigger then ourselves maybe out there, but until I have proof, other then BOOM the Earth existed, I won't know for sure.

Not true. I'm LDS and I certaibnly don't treat him like he's a God (Joseph Smith). I admire him for the role he played in restoring the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the center of our church. We revere Joseph Smith as the first prophet in this dispensation, but it's the Church of Jesus Christ, not the Church of Joseph Smith.

And Christmas is my favorite holiday. Then Halloween. If we "worshipped" Joseph Smith, we'd celebrate his birthday (Dec 23rd) but we celebrate Christmas at the traditional winter solstice period as the rest of the Christian world.

reply

Obviously you don't understand what I was saying. I'm not saying you don't teach about Jeebus, just when I was in church all they taught us about was Young and Smith. Like Young, they never talk about the horrible things he did. just the good.
