I've noticed most, if not all, of the comments here seem to be from LDS members. I had no idea this was even a LDS film, I just saw it in the store and it sounded like a good idea for an oddball comedy. I rented it and enjoyed it quite abit.
It seems many LDS folks don't like this film. However, it appears well-informed people such as yourself, non-LDS folks, and the film community liked it. For the LDS folks who didn't like it, lighten up, life is too short :) For those who did like it, you have great taste!
It was kind of funny. But I hate how the characters are the same way in every Mormon movie. Annoying.Arrogant. Judemental. Self righteous. Not all Mormons are like that and it pisses me off because every movie shows Mormons that way. You'd think they'd want to show Mormons as normal people, not idiots.
What about the bishopric member? He and his family, along with the Tongan family were all fine and normal. So was the stake president. The snooty neighbor was the only one featured as the annoying arrogant one. Sure there was the scene at the end in the church with a couple of other people speaking out against the newly called bishop, but there were others who spoke up for him as well. I think it was a pretty fair portrayal.
I'm not a member of the church and I liked this movie. I thought it was clean and very funny. I'm glad that I bought this movie. I actually own several mormon movies and have enjoyed all of them. My faves are The RM, Charly, Best Two Years, and Singles Ward. But I also own The Work and the Glory 1 and 2, God's Army, Brigham City, Out of Step, Sons of Provo, Home Teachers, and Baptists at the BBQ. If you have not seen these you may want to.
I know a many mormons (even though I live in Mississippi about 1/5th of this town is Mormon).
Just like any other christian group you have the "church lady" who gossips and is very judgemental. And then you have your "good" christians. Who just make it on their own doing the right thing.
I'm LDS and I liked this movie. Mostly because it showed the judgemental Mormons verses the ones who aren't like that. I AM LDS and I run into that with other LDS members (being avoided because I'm not "typical", though I'm active, I am definitely not the stereotyple). I also loved the end, how the family influence of the LDS people influenced how they went forward with their family. It's not about converting (which I liked too), but rather about friendship despite differences.
My wife is LDS, I'm not, and we both like this movie. I especially like that the snooty, self-righteous lady is played as the real buffoon here. Most Mormons I know would probably agree.
