These Guys are doing SA Proud

Never before have i been this excited about a movie coming out of South Africa. This has got to be the first time that a movie is coming out that has ZERO to do with apartheid, racism, politics, etc; but at the same time is not targeted at your average simple-minded Leon Schuster fan. (South Africans will know what im talking about)

Hopefully this will get some international exposure, seeing as the guys have been on MTV almost everywhere (except the states). And, with that exposure, international audience will realise that we're capable of making non-politically themed movies...

Lets keep our fingers crossed.

These guys are a breath of fresh air, I just wished they released there shorts on American MTV. Their great.

Leon Schuster sucks! He's a lavitorial moron with no originality! These guys, however, actaully make SA look good. Unlike Schuster who makes SA look like they haven't evolved like the rest of the world.

I can't wait for this movie. I think it's going to be HILARIOUS. I must point out, though, that "The Flyer" and "Max and Mona" are 2 recent south african movies that have nothing to do with "apartheid, racism, politics, etc; but at the same time are not targeted at your average simple-minded Leon Schuster fan." They're both good movies.
I really feel that the local movie industry will just keep getting better and better.

I must say that i agree with you competely. i am a film student in SA and seeing this come out only pushes me forward in going out and making films. If/when this movie is released internationally it will be bringing SA just one step closer to being able to make international quality movies all the time.

You really think this piece of CRAP (i saw it about 2 months ago) is something to be proud of? If anything, they've done a major disservice to the ENTIRE SA film industry. Or maybe they've done something good; nobody is going to take these clowns seriously now. Try getting funding NOW, 'cause you're REALLY going to have to demonstrate that you have a product, not some wank.

This lady sure got it right, apart from the Leon S comment, but she was obviously in a bad mood. Not that I blame her.

The film opened number one at the SA box office.

It beat Russell Crowe's 'Cinderella Man', 'Herbie', etc.

It seems funding for future projects shouldn't be a problem.

Number 1? And your info source would be? Let's see what the first week is like. I really can't see this one going anywhere. Just as a matter of interest; how many cinemas was it released at?

reply

I first heard it was #1 at the Box Office from a journalist friend. And it's front page news on the Nova Newspaper, and actually heard John Robbie speaking about this on 702 earlier.

I believe it's on around 50 screens in SA.

Also heard that it was #1 by quite a margin.

I think this film is going to surprise many people. Certainly seems to be a hit with the teenagers.

reply

well..it'll certainly surprise me! I note that most media is keeping very quite about it. That is, reviews are not readily available. That's ominous
"Straight Outta Benoni went out on a big release of 45 prints" That's a LOT of prints. Plus the marketing hype. I suspect there is a reluctance to criticise it, simply because it's local.

I saw this two days ago and I have to say that although it wasn't the greatest flick to come out of SA, it was a breath of fresh air in the SA comedy scene.

I would've like to see this film with better acting in it. Saying that acting was 'supposed' to be poor throughout a movie is just a crap excuse. The lines were pretty funny and some scenes were hilarious ('Stop throwing me with koes-koes!!!'), but a few more takes on some scenes would possibly have brought on some improvement. The Director may have been to lenient on the actors because they are such close friends.

Shot to the okes for giving it a try though. I laughed and I'm glad I saw this film. I hope they mature as filmakers and make a kak funny movie next time. The new generation of South Africa has an awesome sense of humour and it's only a matter of time before it's nailed perfectly on screen.

I think SA is a great country
I feel proud to say that now.
Crazy Monkey does justice to all the stereotypes which have been slapped across not only whites in the this country but everyone and the country itself.

It is amazing how well this movie has done !!!

Well, I see Apteker is having 2nd thoughts about making another movie. Maybe he'll get his money back on DVD sales, or something. Eventually. The marketing was great...just a pity about the product!
