It's the WORST movie I've ever seen!!

I cannot believe there are actually people out there who enjoyed this. It had absolutely no ambition whatsoever. Even Britney's Crossroads had more "depth". I'm sorry, but this is no movie South Africa can be proud of!

I'd rather stick to Leon Schuster, Anant Singh and Katinka Heyns. They are the only film makers who could could label their films as "Proudly South African". As far as these monkeys are concerned... I'll give their sequel a pass... big time!

hey gnapsack, at first when I read your review I was almost upset
because I thought the movie was a really good, funny, new and yes
"proudly South African", but then I realized that I should not take this
seriously because anybody that thought crossroads had any depth should
not be considered a good source for anything. I'm not sure how you could
even suggest it isn't proudly South African. Just because this isn't a
Katinka Heyns drama doesn't mean it can't be part of the mix. And it
seems that it's a welcome addition to the mix, as Straight Outta Benoni
is number one at the box office

I LOVED this movie. And the animation scenes were AWESOME.

I wish there was more. But still, how many SA films have decent animation ever?

I can't believe you didn't enjoy this movie????

It's a classic in my books. Totally fun.

I'm really proud that these guys are representing South Africa. And I'm definitley going to check out their sequel...

When people first heard of this movie, all of them (including me) were expecting way to much.

This realy is a great movie. I thought it was very funny. But when you go and watch it dont expect a "Van Wilder" or a "Road Trip" type movie. This is south africa, not America.

Just see it for what it is, a nice relaxing comedy that you can enjoy without having to overthink it.

The thing I liked the most is the fact that these guys just dont give up. Even when things look the worst.

This movie was terrible, further evidence that commercial success has no bearing on quality... to me its no great surprise that it was number one- it began its inevitable and inexorbale move to the top of the charts weeks before it was released on the back of a huge marketing campaign (which included not one but two appearances on Idols!!! who can ask for more; a spot on one of the most watched TV programs at prime time too!)

Someone mentioned the Animation in the beginning and i have to admit it was very well done- however you have to get worried when the title sequence of a movie is more thoughtful, more entertaining and of higher quality than the entire rest of the film.

The whole thing seems terribly unambitious with Williams and Jack shuffeling along almost apologetically, and the film suffers from the usual south african film look- why the hell do our movies always appear like they were shot on a camcorder bought at the bargain bin at Makro when we produce soom beautifully shot and realised adverts?(allan grey, the new edgars ads, BP etc etc).

The Crazy monkey vignettes worked on MTV, as they were a successful parody of the ridiculous Jack Ass. However stretching the "stoner-humour" over an hour and a half becomes incredibly tiresome as do the distracting and unneccesary cameo appearances by South African "celebrities", which are about as subtle as the subliminal shots of the devil in the exorcist- in other words they serve no real purpose other than to break your concentration. You have to ask yourself what real value, intrinsic or otherwise, having Schalk Burger and John Vismis in a movie adds.

There is a serious lack of focus as well and the whole movie fails to gel as a whole, what is the purpose of the manziman saga? Its like an injoke that no one in the audience is ever made privy to.

Brendan Jack also makes for an annoying onscreen entity, he is way to swarmy, rotund and self-assured. He is like a fat kid that dropped some smarties down his pants and discovered his penis. No i dont feel bad saying that; here's a guy who has gone incredibly far on the steam of a lot of ambition and very ordinary talent. His eyes positively gleam with ambition, he is a master of self-promotion but sadly he makes for a very sub-standard actor.

There is one small glimmer of hope in an otherwise doomed venture. Gavin Williams gives a quiet, understated performance, he's affable with a warm screen presence. But he is only rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

This is not the great south african comedy some people were expecting, it is not a good movie, it is not a mediocre movie, it is a very, very bad movie.Putting a whole bunch of south african pseudo-celebrities in a movie does not a comedy make. Its like an all-star cast with no stars. You almost expect Brendan Jack to pop up at the end of the movie in a sick parody of porkie pig and johnny rotten and belch out "have you ever had that feeling that you have been cheated?"

See it and vomit every meal you have ever eaten.

To Mr Basla8
(I assume you're male because of your language, but if you're female... fair enough)

You CANNOT assume that I am a “world class wanker”. I do appreciate local movies. In terms of comedy I am indeed a big fan of Leon Schuster and Casper de Vries (And they are as South African as can be!) I can also laugh at really stupid stuff – in fact I did smile during some scenes of this movie, but generally I really did not enjoy it and thought it does not represent the South African film industry in a positive manner. (Or… maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood in watching it)

So please mister basla8 (whatever that stands for). Know this – I am South African and definitely PROUDLY South African. DO NOT make unjustified assumptions about me!

Hey gnapsack, no sweat - different strokes for different folks – if you're a Schuster fan, I'm sure he'll have another fart-joke-filled-candid-camera-ripoff-maudlin-idealised-nostalgia-for-apartheid blockbuster out soon. Personally, I love Crazy Monkey for two reasons – a) I get irony and b) there is no animal dung, rectal invasion or painful flatulence of any kind anywhere in the film.

hey aadams!!
i couldnt agree with you more!

reply

Hey aadams- you speak truth!!!

Even in really funny good american comedies, there always has to be stupid toilet scenes which really ruin the whole movie.
The CM boys really did well with leaving that out.
Bought the dvd the other day and it just gets funnier and funnier.

Now, for those who thought the movie wasn't funny. I personally don't understand why as much as you don't understand those of us who LOVED it... unless you are the CM guys looking for compliments!

now, One of the first words people use to describe me is:

"Brilliant sense of humour" and if that's mainly how I'm defined by all sorts of different people with totally different backgrounds and senses of humour, i think i have a let to stand on when saying how funny this film actually is.

I recon the people who don't like it just don't get it. I have a question for those who hated the movie... do you guys like Ali G, Monty Python, Blackadder and other british-type comedies at all?

Who can't think the Mermaid song isn't so hysterical?

let me know

I hope this film was never showed at some international film festival like Cannes
I'll not be able to sleep if it was...oh the embarrassment

okay, drama aside... this film sucked

btw - I liked Crazy Monkey on MTV

this film had nothing of the cult elements and was pure torture to watch. I gave it a 2star rating just because I liked them on TV...otherwise they would have received no vote from me at all
