Can only thin women date?

I've been waiting for a while to see this movie --- finally out on DVD, and while not too bad, not as good as I'd hoped. The main thing that struck me --- the only women in this movie who actually end up with men (the characters played by Dyan Keaton and Sally Kellerman) were painfully thin. Size zero looks dreadful on young women, but on these older ones, as someone said on the "plastic surgery" thread, one keeps thinking "osteoporosis".

Note how Marilyn, who while attractive is certainly a little overweight, just ends up with the dog. Lots of older women in this movie, but it still seems like the only ones who "deserve" the men are the ones who conform to the Hollywood ideal of being emaciated. Very disappointing.

You fail to include that both of these so called "thin women" also lied, or somewhat mislead in order to first get their men. The other women in the movie seemed to be more honest and sincere ( with the exception of Rene Taylor character).

I just presently saw the movie on DVD. I am in my 60s. I was single in part of my 40s but now am married to a great lady who was thin when we met.

YES, only slender women can count on getting dates. Just as women aren't attracted to overweight, pot-bellied men who are not well-groomed, healthy and slender men are not attracted to heavy women. There is no use arguing whether it is "supposed to" be that way, it just is. If a nice lady wants to have a decent selection of nice men to date, she needs to realize this. Don't smoke, exercise regularly, have an attracting figure. A man will never find out who you are "inside" if he is never attracted to you in the first place.

Now my wife, approaching 60, is no longer slender, but that doesn't matter. She is still healthy and I love her for who she is and not what her figure looks like. But I may never had gotten to know her if she had not been attractive 20 years ago.

OK, let me get this straight, TxMike. Unless an older woman looks like Dyan Cannon or Sally Kellerman, no man will ever look at her. You say your wife is "no longer slender". Does that mean that if you croak tomorrow, your wife will never find another man? I'm glad I'm not married to you.

reply

Yes, I too am very glad that you are not married to me!! :-)

I completely agree with nancine .. how shallow CAN you be, TxMike?

Not all of us would qualify as 'trophy wives', but can certainly do better than the likes of you if appearance is all you're interested in.

The Brenda Vaccaro character clearly had no interest in dating - she was mourning a wonderful marriage. They make a big deal of saying that Len Cariou had been widowed three years previously and that Joseph Bologna wasn't going to let him moulder away.

She even pushed away the dog for a long time until realizing that he'd always be there for her. I know a lot of older women who married young, had good marriages until the deaths of their spouses and now have no interest in men anymore - they want their friends and their pets and they have a pretty damn good life doing whatever they want. Who says you have to have a man when you're older if you don't when you're younger?

You go, ladies! Do it however it feels right - you've certainly earned it!
