Loathsome

What possessed me to rent this drivel from the video store is beyond me. It is not clever, or ground-breaking or 'on-the-edge', it is just dumb. This "film" is so disconnected from anything even remotely interesting I wonder what lead the filmmakers to make it.

It is basically a feature length music clip depicting a group of Asians often behaving like dorks and some mysterious macho-looking guy who is just 'there' for no apparent reason. The inspid voice over goes nowhere and says nothing.

Who is this film for? Is it primarily for the Japanese market, in which case Australia is just the setting? Is it for the Australian market, and if so, why would Australians be drawn to it, since we are just background extras?

It was like watching someone's holiday video, and we all know how boring that can be. I saw no point in this film whatsoever.

reply

Can this even be termed a 'movie'?? Isn't it really just an overlong music-video? It was a journey to nowhere, featuring people who did nothing, with a voice over that said nothing.

All it seems to be was an exercise in how to use a digital camera.

reply

Well it's not supposed to be a traditional movie with dialogue, heroes and whatever. It's putting a different spin on the road trip genre cutting out all the crap that hollywood loves to include.

I do agree with you it is similar to a music video but it is something more. For me something made it so uplifting, I can't explain how but it did.

How could you say they did nothing or said nothing? It was a journey, they had to overcome problems and they acheived their goal in reaching their destination.

But hey, i liked the movie so yeah i would defend it against your comment. I know many people who will hate this movie for being "boring".

Open your mind and let the music and camera shots tell you the story.

To the people that have not seen bondi tsunami; its not too bad if you are open to something different and if you like your traditional movies don't watch it you will probably turn it off within 15 minutes.

And hey i'm an Australian 16yr old girl from sydney who does not like surfing. I dont belive the film maker intended this movie to fit into a market, its an individual low budget film with lots of potential.

Its your loss if you didnt like it but i congragulate you for being the only person to voice out your opinions about this movie.

I can't believe people are bagging this film so much.

I saw it last night and it took my breath away.

I watched it with wide open eyes, absorbing every tiny detail, and I will watch it again and continue to study each character, trying to work out their reasons for being who they are, and trying to find the goals and aims that each distinct personaloty holds.

I have never seen anything like Bondi Tsunami.

To me it was beautiful. The most beautiful film I have ever seen.

reply

Well, I don't think I need to be told to "have an open mind". I am a film maker myself and see movies by the bucket load. Maybe at the age of 34 I am just too old to appreciate such fine "cinema". (Yes I choked on that word in relation to this movie).

reply

Robert, you mention that you are a filmmaker yourself. Could you please tell us the titles of your films(and links to their website or IMDb) so that we may give you some feedback on your art?

reply

I have been making short films and have been an associate producer at Channel 7. Last year I directed my first feature fim which is called 'Venworth Sears' and which is currently in post-production.

Once 'Sears' is released then you are more than welcome to make comments on it. (Curious though, how would you critique a film based solely on website information??)

reply

to Robertwb; I wouldn't base it solely on website info. Wanted the page to find out about the movie. That is; title, when and where I could see it, back story, details etc. I'm interested to know if you have had any personal contact with the makers of Bondi Tsunami as your comments about it seem to have a personal edge to them.

reply

I'm open to something different and I don't necessarily like traditional movies. However, I still found Bondi Tsunami uninteresting, uncompelling and if you like 'boring'.

Good on ya, if you liked it. I can see how you might have enjoyed it.

reply

I saw this at a packed out cinema in Byron Bay and then saw it a further two times at the cinema elsewhere.
I can't believe that this draws so many bad reviews. Whoever calls himself and a filmmaker and does not like this film should be beaten to death with his own video camera.

reply

Just because something is bizarre and original does not make it by ANY means good or worth watching. I saw this on World movies and was in utter confusion. I'm a film student and appreciate many foreign films and alternative cinema but its nice if they serve a purpose and actually tell a story. Watching someone pretending to surf on a car roof isn't exactly worth shooting for more than 10 seconds, nor is a girl needing to pee and walking over desert in high heels and a mini skirt. I dont think scenes like this deserve montages. Thats all this movie is - a series of bizarre and pointless montages. The dialogue is dull, made no sense, no point and just is plain stupid. No one says anything insightful... it tries to be philisophical but they just spin stupid uninspiring words that have no meaning to them beyond the surface. DONT WATCH THIS FILM.

As good as my word, here is a link to a film I made (wrote) that has won numerous film festival awards, including the People's Choice Award at the Bondi Film Festival (how's that for a coincidence?????)

It also won the Audience Favourite Award at the 2008 Brisbane International Film Festival.

So there you go vim18 - you wanted a link to my work, well there it is.
