This show is so racist!!!!

This show is racist! They just want us to know that the moose and the pruple thing is black. Why do they have to be sterotype black names, Tyrone and Uniqua? And how come the three minorities, Tyrone, Uniqua and Pablo have to share a yard but the two whites, Tasha and Austin have their own backyards. What minorities can't afford a house with one yard? Plus every episode where they are playing a game about kings and queens Tasha is always the queen or rich lady. Like the egyptian episode, also the episode where Tyrone and Uniqua wanted to be Knighted, and the mystery episode. She's either the queen or rich lady. And who was King? Austin. Why do Tyrone have to be Tasha's butler in the mystery episode and do whatever she tells him as he put it in that episode. And wasn't he the thief too? What's that about? The racism and prejudice is so obvious. If I watched this show more I'm sure I can find more racism.

"Me? I me, but who are you?"

I will now proceed to deconstruct this paragraph and counter each point made: first, Uniqua is pink, not purple; second, the voice actor for Pablo is white and the fact that Tasha and Austin have their own backyards is fitting since they are the two least seen characters; third, Tasha's roles as "the queen or rich lady" fit her personality and the episodes in question were "The Mummy King", "Knights Are Brave and Strong", and "Whodunit?"; fourth, paralleling what I just said about Tasha, Austin's role as king fits his personality just as well (if you overlook his shyness, that is); fifth and finally, Tyrone's role as butler fits his personality equally as well as Tasha's And Austin's roles fit their's and Tyrone was the thief only because Tasha was bored and thought that a little mystery might be fun. So, if you take the time to do the research, consider the facts, and keep an open mind, you will see that The Backyardigans is just a harmless kids show that is not racist in any way.

Excellent observations Btkittle!

I don't think the roles of the characters are given depending on their race, it is simply by their personalities. Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, and Austin are pretty much given an equal amount of quality roles. Tasha is usually the Queen/Princess/Empress/Goddess/Rich Lady/Boss/Expert because of her snotty attitude and probably the way she is raised, not because of her ethnic background.

reply

That was EXACTLY my point!

reply

Tasha's not queen every time because she's white, it's because she's a massive b**ch. Also if the show truly were racist it wouldn't have anyone with African American culture references. It's a pretty diverse show.

There was someone else that posted a thread saying exactly the opposite, that the show tries to rub African American culture in the viewer's face. In a stoke of hilarious insanity, this poster called it Blackyardigans. lol

You know what I think? You're BOTH crazy.

Not crazy - just stupid trolls.

And Tasha is no bitch; she's just classy.

reply

So glad to see that some people can notice everything about a show instead of only what they want to be there...
It is a show about kids pretending. They all have major roles in different episodes. I think it is a very equal show for everyone. Tasha has the same personality in every episode she is in. By the way, nobody was a "theif" in the mystery episode. If you are going to complain about something, get your facts straight.

reply

You are right, she does have the same personality in every episode, we could do with a change.

Oh, and Tasha is no class act, she is just a bit*h!

reply

Why change what works? EACH of the characters has kept their personality in every episode and that's what makes this show PERFECT!

Can I point out the fact that these characters have no race - THEY ARE ANIMALS, FOLKS! They aren't black kids and white kids. They are pink, purple, blue, etc. So maybe the kids who do the voice overs have their accents or whatever, but ya know what - they are all talented kids who deserve to do voice overs for such a popular show! Who cares what color the singers are, as long as they are doing a fantastic job? And obviously they are, because every child in America LOVES the backyardigans. And so maybe the names of the characters are stereotypical, but guess what - our children are going to run across kids named Tyrone and Pablo in their lives. They're going to run across blacks and whites and hispanics, and they're going to run across personalities like Tasha's. That's life! You can't parrallel the roles they play by the race they probably are, because you can't say "Well Tasha was the queen in the Nile River one" and leave out the fact that Austin was also one of her slaves. We as parents are reading too deeply into these programs and forgetting that they all have moral points in the end - points that we should be striving to teach our kids instead of getting upset over racism that may or may not be there. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I agree COMPLETELY with EVERYTHING you said; THEY'RE JUST KIDS SHOWS, PLAIN AND SINPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sungoddess & cfruge:

I agree...It's a KID' SHOW! THAT is how it should be viewed!
Sure I(ME, The GROWN UP!) recognize that a couple of the characters "sound" black, but my daughter doesn't! Sure, I HAVE my racial prejudices (ESPECIALLY since I had to experience FORCED bussing as a kid!) about people--who doesn't--but By Gosh, I make a serious effort to hide it from my daughter...
Young kids are color-blind: they play & have fun & laugh without realizing differences like that; They have to be TAUGHT to be prejudice, either by someone acting badly towards THEM or someone teaching them that the "Different Looking" person is "bad"----WELL...THAT Ain't gonna be me! Life's hard enough as it is so you should really try to help keep kids 'innocent' of such stuff;
So far I'm lucky: My daughter's circle of playmates is kind of multi racial: Mostly Latins (Mexican, Salvadoran), Eurasians, Black, Mulattoes...she greets all of them the same way: A big hug, a kiss and "I love you!"I've missed you so much!"

You're all writing a lot of sense, but I advise you NOT to waste your fingers in this thread. Its creator is obviously a troll, who isn't even posting here anymore, and is most certainly not interested in reading the replies.

But anyway... since a delicate topic has been raised, it's interesting to point out a fact about the show. On the interview with Janice Burgess on the Nick Jr. website, it becomes quite clear that the Backyardigans is heavily inspired on HER childhood, and the kind of people she lived with. It's quite certain that the voice talents for Uniqua and Tyrone were purposefully chosen to be African-American, but this might be just because of Mrs. Burgess' familiarity with her own past. But taking the show as a whole, that fact gains a quite noble subtext: by associating the "black" dialect and accent with characters that aren't grouped by any race, the show gives the notion that the colour of one's skin, or the way one speaks, etc., aren't things that set them apart from us, but things that add variety to our life - and eventually that, after all, everybody is different, and thus everybody is the same. There's no more coherent logic than that.

Tubular:

I know what you mean but I had to vent! I mean, why bring us such a subject on board for a children's show where there are probably children posting?

NM

reply

This is for Tubular, cfruge and nickm - It's good to know that those who are left communicating on this topic are people who are either not prejudice, or at least try not to be. I didn't know about the interview with Janice Burgess. Most children's shows do involve multi-race children these days, which is good. You make a very logical point. I agree completely.

reply

as the previous blogger pointed out this is a show for kids. I watch it with my daughter and can see traits in the show which match both of us. As children only see in basic terms the show has to be broken down (as apposed to dumbed down) so children can relate to it better. If less educated people see that as racist then that is more to do with their mind set than the show and no doubt could argue why a rainbow is just another way to poke fun a minorities.
