Actor portraying Augusten was way too old

The film would have been more convincing had they actually cast an actor between 12 and 15. The fact that Joesph Cross was 18 or 19 at the time of shooting, simply devalued the shock value of the movie

no way they would put a younger boy in this story. i am sure is was a deliberate plot to lessen the gay relationship

I just wish they used a different actor...ANYONE else would have been better for me. I just hate the son. He's got to be one of the ugliest guys ever and annoys the crap out of me!

I agree, he looked way too old. Augusten was only 12 when his mother left him, that's so young. He really needed to be younger...

Augusten was very tall for a 14-year-old, as he's mentioned in various books he's written. He was often mistaken for being 16 or so just based on his height.
By the time he was 16 he had his adult height of 6'2".

Augusten didn't look 16 in the film though.

I agree, they should have cast someone who looked 14, 15, 16.

BUT, that being said, the actor who played him was really good at the acting part ... and that's what he was hired to do.

I missed the beginning of the movie, so I didn't know how old Augusten was supposed to be but when it was revealed he was 14 I did a double take. I could've believed if he was supposed to be 17 or 18, but anything beyond that is a stretch of imagination. Then again, Ryan Murphy always does that (Glee is a far worse offender) and Evan Rachel Wood at least looked her age.
