why is it called running with scissors?

anyone??

youth is like diamonds in the sun, diamonds are forever

reply

Its like the use of poetry... a metaphor for what he is going through.

Veronica Mars is smarter than you.

reply

I dunno...

But that's exactly what I wanted to do after watching such an idiotic movie. To run with scissors till I ran out of breath.

It is a complex metaphor, only grow ups can undertand, kid.

reply

Don't think you're too smart lady, you don't even know me.

I'm talking of a movie I actually saw and which I disliked a lot, not because I am not used to this particular type of movies, but because it actually exaggerates homosexual stereotypes in a sadly, unrespectful way; turning an otherwise engaging story into a mind-numbing charade - that's why I think it is idiotic.

I understand the freaking "metaphor". Actually, it's not really complex, but if you think it is, there's your reason to believe you're so smart.

What would be a respectful way of showing homosexual stereotypes? Give three examples, none of which involve Judy Garland.

reply

This is what it was like for homosexuals in the 70's. Only the odd or flamboyant ones came out back then and it changed and more average men came out later and it has taken more than 40 years since the start of the sexual revolution.

IMDb; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...another poster

and those who can spell.

reply

Well, Augusten aspires to be a Hair Dresser (or Vidal Sassoon?)... which involves scissors, obviously. The Running part - cause it's dangerous and he has a whacked out life? Oh yeah, Neil had scissors to attack the doctor with.

reply

that's why it's called running with scissors when he runs with the scissors to kill the doctor. awful movie. pathetic.

reply

in the book, one of the chapters is called 'running with scissors." they are saying something about how in their lives they are running but not going anywhere with their lives, and one of them says ..."yea...running with scissors."

like someone before said, it's a metaphor about their crazy lives...

The entire film about this boy who has no structure, no boundaries, no parental figures giving him guidence and protecting him while he finds his feet.

He had nobody to tell him to not run with scissors. It's almost an oxymoron.

reply

everyone who replied to this thread is an idiot...

apart from spooks75 who hit the nail on the head! no wonder loads of people don't like this film...it is because they do not understand it.

reply

uh , actually the guy before spooks75 was right. it is the name of the book, and is actually taken from a specific sentence in the book, describing how burroughs felt at the time.

reply

Even I that I am not an english speaking person understand what "running with scissors" means. It's just an expression, it can be easily translated in other language , I guess it just want to mean of something really dangerous. You don't run holding a pair of scissors (or a knife for that matter). I guess that's it.
For the rest I think this movie was dysfunctional stupid. It didn't have anything in it and the dialogues were idiotic. I think is one of the worst film I have seen. Why should we be interested in this person life experience? none of the characters are sympathetic. This just reminds me of another film I recently saw "A guide to recognizing your saints", another story of a life of another perfectly boring human being who had luck, just luck. Imagine all of those who actually work hard to achieve something... it's almost an insult.
I wonder how do some people get their movie financed...

reply

Duh!

Parents always tell their children not to run with scissors in their hand because it is too dangerous.

So if the title is Running With Scissors... it is a metaphor for living dangerously, on the edge.

reply

more specifically, the "with scissors" indicates that the running is being done with the impending hazard of the scissors

.... but the runner/child is not mature enough to be aware of the danger of the scissors.

And in this case, there is no parent around (father has split, mom is spiraling down into mental illness) to warn against the danger of running with scissors.

reply

At the end of the book, augusten and natalie are eating in a cafe and augusten asks her what she wants to do with her life. and she says " I don't know. I like to keep my life as if I'm running with scissors."

reply

I think it's called running with scissors because running with scissors is dangerous and can hurt yourself and others. The 'doctor' was running with scissors because he was breaking all the rules of society and not watching out for others

Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining

reply

I think its really more that the metaphor is that they are all running with scissors in the sense where they are putting themselves in positions where they are opening the possibility of hurting themselves. when youre a kid, they always tell you not to run with scissors because you can hurt yourself. I think this metaphor means that theyre living their lives where they are the cause of their own pain- not everybody else- and when they "fall" (make a mistake in life, etc.) they put themselves in the position to get hurt even more for running with scissors in the first place.
