What did everyone think of this movie?

I read the review, and yes it does sound aweful. I watched the trailer and the scenery and music sounds beautiful, is it really as bad as the review is? From what i saw in the trailer it does not seem that bad. I have been debating on whether to buy this or not, please let me know what you think if you have seen it!
*I saw the 1993 one back around that time, and the girl is so adorable, with her braids on her head, and her outfits she is a perfect Heidi in my opinion. The girl in this one, doesnt really seem like Heidi but I can't make that judgement until i see the movie. I think i'm gonna def buy the 1993 version but im not sure yet, maybe I will buy both....cant decide.

thanks,
shoshana

I also would like to know what peoples opinions of this film and the 1993 are. Would like to get one of them for my daughter to watch.

I'd personally buy the 2005 version AND the 1930's version with Shirley temple if you could. I personally preferred the 2005 version to the 1993 version. The only problem I had with the 2005 version was the accents.

Personally I didn't like the 1930s version, Shirley Temple (sorry ST fans) annoys me. But thanks, seen it online for less than a fiver so i am going to buy the 2005 version. Would like to get the dubbed TV series to watch again. Hopefully Disney will show the 1993 version on TV soon.

I agree, skip the 1993 and buy Shirley Temple and this one.

The Shirley Temple movie, by accounts of those involved in it, started out as a decent try at filming "Heidi," but was ruined in large part by Shirley's mother. She was jealous of Delmar Watson, who Shirley herself chose to play Peter, and so padded the story with ridiculous stuff to build up Shirley and downplay Delmar. Partly as a result of this, the Shirley version was worse than it really needed to be.

Just about all the movies portray the grandfather as grouchier than in the book, no doubt for dramatic purposes, but the Jason Robards version carried this to ridiculous lengths. Max Von Sydow and even the guy in the Shirley version were MUCH better! In the 1993 version, even Noely Thornton, who played Heidi, was way too gloomy. Emma Bolger is a veritable ray of sunshine in comparison.

Shirley was the closest in looks and personality to Heidi. Her hair was blond, but in black-and-white it didn't look too far off. Noely Thornton was the worst. Her hair wasn't just long, but RIDICULOUSLY so--wrapped clear around her head! Emma Bolger had beautiful brown hair, but that they didn't even bother to curl it was one of the drab things about this film, which was slow-paced, uninspiring, and took many liberties, but sad to say STILL ranks in the upper 50% of films which have tried to portray "Heidi" as at least a "nice try" compared to some of the travesties which have been committed under this famous child's name.

This was certainly the huggiest "Heidi." My mom complained about Heidi "hugging everyone she would hug in real life and everyone she wouldn't"--including the goats but not Rottenmeier! Rottenmeier thought Heidi wasn't a real name, but of the thousands of girls named Heidi, how many are actually christened Adelheid?

All the actors were wonderful, and except for being able to understand every word, the British accents didn't really bother me; they are still closer than Americans would be.

I just finished watching this. I wasn't even aware of it, just happen to be looking through the channels and was curious.
It's been years since I've seen the Shirley Temple version, and even longer since I've read the book, so please take my critique with a few grains of salt, but I enjoyed this version.
There were a few liberties taken to move the plot along and shorten the length of the film. I wish they hadn't done so, but I'm supposing that this was done for the age group at which this movie was aimed.
I wasn't keen on how they tried to touch on the subject of Fraulien Rottenmeir's objection to Heidi. They actually gave the character a touch of cruelty, going beyond what was in the book, if I remember correctly. They also changed the sleepwalking aspect, showing Sebastian finding Heidi at the front door of the house, instead of the "who left the door open" plot line from the book.
But this film took the story to completion, complete with Herr Sesseman coming up the mountain at the end and... (well, if you've read the book, you know how it ends ). That was nice. I don't like movies that cut short from the book. And overall, I enjoyed the cast. Heidi was likeable, but not too precocious. Grandfather was a "curmudgeon" who was afraid to love again, only to have Heidi bring it out in him. The character of Clara was sorely underwritten - they could have done more with her. And Sebastian was *wonderful*! I would love to see more of this actor's work!

I realize that it is nearly 2 years past since you wrote your original post, and I am curious to know if you have seen this yet. And if so, did you enjoy it?
If you're still wondering whether or not to spend the money on this movie, try getting it through your local library first, or perhaps Netflix.
It is certainly worth the time to watch it.

This is from my brain, so no guarantees.

It was endearing and the characters were all well played. I did have trouble though with the accents and not having read the book I do not know what they are meant to be. We had english accents in all but Heidi and her aunt. There was not really any european accents even though there was alot of time spend in Frankfurt. Like the locals in Frankfurt could have had the correct accent, so poor attempt at correct casting there. I found Emma to overact somewhat but on the whole her performace was good.
Overall I enjoyed this a lot and it was nice to imagine been able to live up the mountain in summer.

We've just finished watching it and loved it! (mind you, I could watch Max Von Sydow read the phone book)

Goodnight, good luck and may your God go with you

I love this film. The only thing wrong with it is the accents. I can deal with the English accents in the city but Irish accents in the Alps? Other than that, it's great
