Boycott Canton, TX for their homophobia towards this film

The city of Canton, Texas was the possible setting for casting and shooting this film. When they learned that the main character was gay, rather than encourage a film that would likely help young gays & lesbian across the country identify with a positive image or message, they yanked their support. I've blogged information I was forwarded from the production group at:

Boycott Canton, Texas and their First Monday sale, and contact them to tell them you disapprove of their homophobia by e-mailing them at: [email protected]

I thought you'd like to know the real reason this movie is not being filmed in Canton, TX. The producers failed to get the proper permits to block off city streets. If they wanted to film on any private property, they were more than welcome. However, without the proper permits, there's no doing anything on any street in Canton. It's just a lot easier to cry discrimination and homophobia than the real reason.

reply

Actually - the facts are:

The city was contacted by the producers on Jan 2, the asst city manager approved the shooting in Canton, including blocking the streets and using city property WITHOUT any mention of city permits, and were also told to go through the chamber of comerece who were EXTREMELY gracious in helping to find the locations and casting locals for the shoot. They knew that the film is a coming of age story and that it was called FAT GIRLS. Many of the private businesses in Canton were extremly helpful, especially BUFFALO GIRLS HOTEL - they rocked! Everything was locked and ready to go just before the first day of shooting.

It was when people found out that the lead character was gay that things started to fall apart. Just two days before shooting, the producers got a call from the chamber saying that the Mayor and City Manager stormed into their office saying they do NOT want this film in Canton. Hmmmmm.........I wonder why. It had been an entire month and the city was fully aware of the film.....funny enough, a permit was issued within 5 hours from the City of Waxahachie..........and the producers were NEVER told in 3 weeks about a permit in Canton.

The producers were told my the city of canton that they should have been told up front that there was a gay character in the film. Should the same be applied if the character was African-American or Jewish?

The film lost money due to the narrowmindedness of Canton. However, it's still being filmed and we have found some incredible people who are not so narrow minded and live in the current century. I feel bad for those wonderful people in Canton who have suffered from the ignorance of others. Still trucking along with the film here in ITALY, TEXAS and WAXAHACHIE. By the way, Italy High School is amazing and they are VERY supportive of our film.

reply

eh...how do you boycott a town?

reply

By not shopping at any of their shops and bad mouth it. From the horses mouth, they were literally kicked out of Canton. I for one am bad mouthing Canton and hope people shop and venture elsewhere besides that small narrowminded little burb.

reply

[deleted]

Boy...that must have hurt. Literally.

reply

You literally boycot a town by literally not talking about it, literally.

reply

Wow...this is getting way too literal for me.

reply

Trust me, the people of Canton couldn't care less if they get boycotted or not. First Monday is typically crowded as hell and it wouldn't hurt anything if the crowds were thinned out a little. Boycott away my friends. But don't expect it to make much difference to anyone in Canton. Not much has changed since I was a little kid there in the early 70s. We Texans are pretty set in our ways.

reply

i hate canton tx i have awarrant there hah. glad i dont live near there anymore. a bunch of lame ass conservatives fill that area of east texas... place blows.

reply

eeeks

to boycott this town, i'd have to actually set foot in texas and i doubt that will happen anytime soon

i think having to live in a town like canton tx is probably punishment for the people of canton tx

reply

whoa, ok now, that is enough. i live outside of canton, in east texas, and yes, everything is correct, about the gayness and what not, but that is no reason to attack texas. texas is great. we have everything in texas. yes , canton sucks a whole lot, and the only thing there is hicks shopping for other people used stuff and stolen pets at first monday, and a burger place. that is the only thing canton has. not all of texas are like this. just most of them, but that doesnt mean texas is bad. we just can help it that its the bible belt.

this is also the second time i wrote this. the first time, i lost connection. so, it isnt as strong. i dont know....

reply

true. you wouldn't catch me in texas for anything.

reply

Oh calm down you damn prissy drama queen.. Freedom of choice goes BOTH WAYS dearie.. and if they decided NOT to let the film be made there, it's not any of your business..! JEEZ you fairies get offended about any perceived slight whether true or not.. but go out of your way to do the most revolting, offending things while crying about your "Right" to do whatever you want. The door swings both ways..get over yourself sister!

Yeah.. I bet you'd like to cott many boys in canton..

reply

You can't complain that gay people overreact to "perceived" slights when you're throwing slurs at them, you do your point no favours by acting like the kind of person they're complaining about.

And what revolting things do gay people go out of their way to do? You seem to live in this weird fantasyland where gay men are just swinging from lampposts blowing each other, or jumping on your car hood at a stoplight and ramming a pineapple up their *beep* As long as they're not *beep* in the streets (something straight people can't do, either) then there's really nothing they're shoving in your face. Unless you actively go out of YOUR way to see things that offend you, by loitering outside gay bars or peeking through the window of a gay couples home.

reply

RE : The producers were told my the city of canton that they should have been told up front that there was a gay character in the film. Should the same be applied if the character was African-American or Jewish? (kim-207 - who thinks she's open minded)

What the hell has being gay got to do with being African-American or being Jewish?

What a ridiculous comparison.

People who are born African-American and *might* wish to attempt to blend in with a community devoid of their race HAVE NO OPTION, in regard to whether or not those around them are aware they are African-American.

You couldn't leave it there though - you had to cite another absurd example and mention being Jewish.

What gets me, is that I can envisage you trying to think of something as far removed from African-American and you plumped for being Jewish.

reply

So you think that all homosexuals can easily blend in with a community devoid of their sexuality? Even aside from never dating the person they love who is of the same-sex, it is not that simple. After all, I'm sure you recall growing up in school and having the kid in your class who was called demeaning names based on their perceived sexuality. Also there have been plenty of cases where a light skinned African-American has tried to pass as white back in the day, and that probably still goes on today. Sexuality and race are perhaps not exactly the same when trying to make examples, but they are still closely linked because of the persecution both receive. And what's worse is you don't even need to homosexual to be persecuted for being perceived to be. After all there are plenty of celebrities who get married to the opposite sex but people continue to believe they are homosexual without any proof. It happens all the time.

reply

Hey, I live in Texas and I love it here. I live in the city that Jonathan Caouette is from, which is a very gay friendly city. You don't think it is a bit hypocritical to generalize an entire state full of people, while condemning bias and homophobia?

reply

A-FREAKIN-MEN
The only thing I have in common with the narrowminded redneck population is that I do love Texas. Who cares why the city shut down the movie, it still got made, so why not just focus on putting that in your victory column and stop worrying about all the rest of it?
You know, once they tried to film a movie in Savannah GA, and they were using the exterior of Jim William's house (if you don't know who he is, read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), and to stop production, he hung a Nazi flag from his balcony (not just bad taste, but anachronistic, since the movie was set in the Civil War era). Nazi's are worse than homophobes, and people got the heck over it, so why don't you? If you're championing for this movie, you go ahead, and quit worrying about the people that stood in the way for whatever reason it was.

Brunettes do it better...

Dear Hippie Love Freaks

I'm from Canton. I have lived there for five years. The only thing wrong with this town is the few toothless rednecks and the fact that everyone knows everyone elses business. I'm sorry if it offends you that Canton is one of the few towns who still has moral. The bible says that Gay/Lesbian relationships are wrong. We live by the bible. It's nice that some of us are protected from this crazy mixed-up world of ours. So just get of our cases. Before you think I am like hateing all Gay and Lesbians I want you to know that my uncle is Gay and I love him very much, I just don't support his life-stlyle. Please just lay-off.

Canton is going through some tough times (Shooting of the coach)so it would be greatly apreciated if we could drop the subject.

reply

I live in northern Texas and I HATE IT HERE!!! Everyone does know your business, finally getting decent stores, and it is wall to wall rednecks. The one thing I will say is that people are polite and that is greatly appreciated. Tolerance needs to be added to that though. You cannot say that you know the Bible (I am not that spiritual a person but I have been educated on a thing or two about this subject by some homosexual friends of mine) and tell me that you do not know that a *beep* is a pile of sticks... Love thy neighbor APPLIES TO EVERYBODY. Did someone leave this sentence out of your Bible? It's in mine... Also, divorce is not believed in either...
We can sit here and bash everyone all day long but just live by the golden rule and we can all have a good time...

Sorry about your coach getting shot... someone here was killed and burned beyond recognition... so goes life, rather unfortunate events to have to teach our children to get used to happening.

GUESS WHAT HONEY?? YOU ARE A REDNECK TOO, SINCE YOU LIVE THERE..

Then stop misusing the word "lifestyle." Lifestyle is HOW one lives one life. It is not a result of genetics. There's no such thing as a straight lifestyle, so why a "gay lifestyle"? Being promiscuous is a lifestyle choice. Being celibate is a lifestyle choice. Drinking is a lifestyle choice. Dieting is a lifestyle choice. Being gay is NOT. Being straight is NOT.

I have not made plans for my summer cross-country drive, but now, thanks to you wonderful haters, I am sure to visit Canton Texas and spend some money to show my support of anyone making what ever decision they choose even if some up-tight folks get bent out of shape because someone dares to not think the same way they do.

I have spent the majority of my life in Texas--a very red state--although I am very blue and was raised by two very liberal West Texans. I moved away to a different part of the country for several years but chose to move back, even though I was well-acquainted with the conservative values that dominate the culture. Why did I move back? I love Texas -- the land, the food, the music and even the climate. I love the fact that the sky comes all the way to the ground. I love the meshing of Mexican, American, French (south east), German (hill country), and any other cultures that have found their way here. I love the fact that you can go into a store and have a half hour conversation with the owner. I love the diversity of geography -- mountains, ocean, desert, piney woods, plains and hills all in one state. I love the way people look with interest when you're traveling out-of-state and say you're from Texas. And I love the fact that there's so many of us here that even a liberal, artsy, vegetarian like me can find like-minded people as well as be friends with people I may not see eye-to-eye with politically. What I've found is that most Texans want to like each other - and if we focus more on our similarities than our differences, we can go a long way.

not true...it WAS due to homophobia.

reply

[deleted]

Sorry, but you're wrong. I was there. The film crew was told they didn't need permits from the city of Canton and had the towns full cooperation...an article even ran in the local newspaper stating how exciting it was to have a film crew...the film crew put deposits down on hotels, paid for meals, etc... --- when the city found out that the lead character was gay - they pulled the plug. end of story. the case is still being looked at by Lamda Legal...but it is very obvious in emails exchanged from the producers and the city the reason that they wouldn't let the crew film. It is very sad to know in todays times there are still homophobic people in the world. It is sad for the people of Canton, Texas that their townleaders shut down something really spectacular.

[deleted]

yah. obviously you are from there considering the fact that you don't know the difference between the words "know" and the word "no" and the words "your" and "you're." Ya see my dear you said, "i no your wrong." For that sentence to make sense it would have to say, "I know you're wrong." Why don't you spend a little more time with an english book and a little less time on imdb making comments about things which you know nothing about? Way to represent for Canton by the way smarty..

reply

The article was a cover up because there would be no way in hell the city would make their selves look bad so they fabricated a story about not haveing permits. The media is very wrong in most cases. Take the shooting of the coach. I was in school when it happened and the news casters were everywhere but they couldn't get the facts straight. It took them 3 hours to finally get the shooters name right. The media just puts information that makes them look good even if they dont' have the facts.

Jar Jar-13's original posting was very beautiful, the nicest (or at least most convincingly nice) thing I've ever read about Texas. Even though I am really appalled by most of what comes outta that state, politically and news-wise...and dang man, Jar-Jar Binks was the worst character ever. I hope you are paying him/it ironical tribute. Because if not that would be just one more strike against Texas.

I'm going do the same.. and get word out to other straight people that they should support a city that took a stand against the glorification of sodomy

reply

I live about 10 minutes from canton in a little town called fruitvale...yea the name sucks but unfortunatly its true that canton called the whole movie thing off because of the gay character, they just came up with the permit thing so a small portion of the people in the town wouldnt complain, all canton has is walmart, dairy palace, two senioritas, and first monday, whats sad is its the biggest town around and most people consider it great, heck thats were my family goes every friday to eat out lol but it is completely conservative and in the bible belt and if your a democrat (like me) well then you better keep your mouth closed while your there.

reply

Cool - Canton can have my business dollars any day of the week! Way to go, People of Canton! Way to take a stand for what you believe in! I'm glad there are people who fight back against people like these movie producers, who clearly suffer from moralphobia!

Goes to show you...stupidity still exists! Equal rights to all...

I live in texas and was actually supposed to be casted in it. Most of the kids knew about the main character being gay and had no problem with it. I was actually chastised about it by my family who are devout christians and most of the rich people in canton are also devout christians, and extrememly against gays and lesbians. With money comes power in any city you have. About the boycott Canton thing im all for it. I hate first monday tourists and visitors they get on my freakin nerves and make me leave early for work so go ahead and never goto First monday. You will make a lot of people happy.

reply

[deleted]

um.. its "now".. not "know".. you should check out a dictionary every once in a while, they are wonderful.. and no one said EVERY christian hates gay people.. but certain "christians" hated the people involved in this film obviously.. and no one in this post ever said that they hated every christian.. so any prejudice you perceived was self established.

This thread is funny as it is sad. Two things I have noticed. People have no clue what they are talking about and yet they still post. The other thing I noticed, if Canton is that bad then MOVE.

reply

Back when I posted that. I was still in high school. Couldn't exactly move on my own. The only way out of that town is through the military. Or get lucky and nail a nice job in Dallas or one of its surrounding citys.

reply

I heard that Canton are homophobic about fat people.

reply

I think I'll move to Canton,it'd be nice to live somewhere that homosexuality is non existent. The way I see it,Canton did what any other place should have done.Movies condoning gays shouldn't be made.In fact they should be outlawed!

Oh and don't bother responding to my comments,I am not an IMDb troll,so I won't be back to read your oh so witty replies.

reply

Canton sounds like my kinda town, i'm gonna move there too! I've got a better idea for a thread - "Let's go out of our way to visit Canton" :)

reply

But i thought steers AND queers come from texas?!?!

reply

Oh please. I'm gay, and you can hardly blame them. To me this film was (in parts) hilarious, but they won't get the humor and they're not going to take kindly to the parodying of religion and the sex in the church setting and so on. To each his own. We gays want acceptance, sure, but we should also be accepting of others. They didn't have the advantage of being gay and knowing it for what it is (something you don't choose but instead GET, like the color of your eyes that you also don't have any control over) or coming to accept it over time (which is a process, so we should give them the time to get there too). Live and let live, I say. To each his own.
