Pilot question

I only started watching the show in the last couple of seasons and caught the rest on Netflix and the set up of the pilot always seem off when compared to the rest of the season 1. The pilot came across like Quinn and Doug's son were going to regulars but by the next ep they were both gone. Yeah, they came back in later seasons but was the pilot done and then the rest of season one was shot later. This same thing happened with Mad Men where it was a year between ep 1 and 2. This might explain why the characters were prominent and then disappeared.

The Pilot was made mid in the Summer of 04 and filming continued in December after series was picked up

I do think Justin Chatwin was intended to be a series regular on the show but since his schedule won't allow it they chose to cast Justin Kirk to fill in that void as Nancy's sidekick as for The actress who played Quinn I'm sure the plan wasn't to ship her out so early but I doubt she would've been involved like Isabelle she was just there to be Silas f???buddy but I do feel she would've known Nancy's secret before Celia or the kids

Whatever the circumstances to get Justin Kirk on the show glad they did. Andy was integral to the series and made me root for the family at times when Nancy was doing some reprehensible things. I wonder as well if the character of Alejandro was supposed to be what Guillermo eventually became. He was introduced as this major drug player, then he's a ball player. Weird and then Guillermo comes in the same way. Again, it worked out for the best because Guillermo was great in the role.
