Not exactly, there are many changes, but some are almost unoticeable, some are. For instance, in the original, you could only be Mario in this one you can be Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi. Also, there are 150 stars now, in the original there was 120. A lot of missions have changed because now each character has a different ability and there is only one type of ? block and it will activate your special ability depending on which character your playing as. Mario either flies with his winged cap or floats in the air like a balloon, Yoshi breathes fire, Wario turns metal, and Luigi goes invisible. Also there are now 30 mini games you can play, but to unlock them you need to get the mini game keys in story mode which are held by rabbits (similar to the one in the original that gave you a star when you caught it), you must catch a certain amount of rabbits with each character. There are also 8 glowing rabbits that start to appear randomly in place of normal ones after you get 80 stars, after you collect all of them you get a key to a secret room in the castle which is in the same room as the one where you switch characters in and you receive a power star. And when you collect all 150 stars and the cannon in the front opens and you blast to the top, like in the original, instead of Yoshi congratulating you and granting you 99 lives, there is just one of Luigi's rabbit, a ? block, and three lives. I'm pretty sure those are most of the major differences, if not then I'll post any I forgot. If you liked the original I'm sure you'll love this one too.
