why so much hate for this movie?

I thought it was better than t3 and better than t5 and just below t1-t2

Why so much hate for this movie?

Because a lot of people didn't get what they were hoping for. They wanted the kind of future that was shown in 2029. Not a movie that takes place in 2018. Other people hate it simply because it's rated PG.

Personally, I didn't think the movie was all that bad. (Although I will admit the heart transplant scene at the end was a bit much.)

I really thought John would die and the terminator would take over for him as a skinjob.

I thought T3 was a good sequel, explored John's reluctance and denial well, had fitting throwbacks to T1 and T2. I actually liked it a little more than T2 which was a bit tedious at times. T4 was a bunch of hokey movie tropes to me, right down to the villain inexplicably revealing their master plan, giving the protagonist time to thwart it.

While I definitely don't agree it was better than TG, I do agree there's too much hate for TS.

They at least did homework/research on the Terminator franchise whereas T3 just sloppily made mistakes all over the place without a care.

For example:
-T3's calling of a T-850, "T-101" so lame and embarrassing for Mostow that he had to later apologise for that crap.
-Changing of JC's age.
-T3 changing the classic lines, "You wanna live? Come on!" and "She'll be back". Ugh.
-Changing Cyberdyne to CRS.
-Then you just have the plain stupidness like the nonsensical control of cars by the T-X.

T3 is filled with actual mistakes and oversights because they didn't pay attention to the background of the series. It pays much less homage to T1 and T2 than any other film in the series and arguably insults them on top of the bargain!

TS OTOH got a lot of stuff right and did at least properly honor the series. Some examples:
-T-600s are the primary field units...some have rubber skin as KR said in T1.
-JC reviews the tapes as shown at the end of T1.
-JC also notes that the T-800 is being built before it should have been. (I.e. they don't just ignore the fact there shouldn't be T-800s "yet".)
-The shotgun strap technique KR uses in T1 is shown to be taught to him by Marcus; also, he gets his trademark trench coat from him.
-JC still has "techie" knowledge and can hack stuff still in this film (something he doesn't seem to have much clue about in T3--he was lucky he figured out the bunker at the end).

It's not perfect though...it did make the "Coltan error" (which came from TSCC, not other Terminator films).

But yeah TS was far more careful and paid attention to these details, while T3 just did whatever the heck they wanted, nearly wrecking things in the process. As a Terminator film TS is above T3, I have to agree.

I agree that T:S is better than T3. It is still a very mediocre film though.

Skynet shouldn't know about Kyle Reese and why he is important. And even if they did, they should have killed him immediately when they captured him. Instead they lock him up in a cell and when he escapes, then they try to kill him? What the hell??

Bad writing there. At least the film took itself seriously and it wasn't a parody like T3.

No idea. I love it, more or less. Watched it several times. Got the disc. Like it more than Terminator 2 - Judgment Day. I didn't care too much about Terminator Genesis. Never really liked Terminator Rise of the Machines. Liked this film from the start. I am not a fan of Christian Bale, but he transformed into John Connor for this film. They said his part was too big. I disagree. They said Kyle Reese was actually unimportant and shallow in this film. I disagree. This is for me the terminator film with the best action scenes. The only big weakness is how the terminators keep throwing John Connor, it does not makes sense.

Well, there's a lot of hate in this world.

But I, for one, loved it. I think it's the best in the T series.

I personally think this is one of the worst action films ever. This is what I wrote in my review for this film:
''Let me start by saying that I didn't expect anything from this film,
just that it won't (hopefully) suck. Guess what happened ? IT SUCKS !!!
There was literally nothing exciting, thrilling or awesome about this
film. When you get to the second half of the film, it looks looks like
a Michael Bay film. IT'S THAT BAD !! Now let's the rant: The direction
is bad, the script is horrific, the characters are really bad, every
time there's action there's always a giant explosion, you couldn't care
less about the characters, slow- motion sequences no one asked for,
when you get to the second half there's so much action it actually
becomes unbearable, stupid one- liners, awful romantic sub-plot,
Christian Bale is seriously bad, two of the characters in this movie
steal Arnold's two famous lines (Come with me if you want to live, I'll
be back), awful shaky cam scenes, there isn't one scene you feel is
interesting, there are many characters with missing background, Arnold
is actually in this film (but only for the final 15 min of this piece
of trash), (SPOILER ALERT) Arnold gets killed in the end, so many
cheesy lines and lastly- a terrible ending.''

Is that a joke? "Come with me if you want to live" isn't Arnold's famous line, it's Kyle Reese's famous line from The Terminator (1984). The character who first stole Kyle Reese's famous line was Arnold's Terminator in T2. The character who "stole" Kyle Reese's famous line in Terminator Salvation was ... Kyle Reese.

Big Terminator film but only recently saw 'Terminator Salvation' - was never super interested because it didn't have Arnold and because of the lackluster response......

It's not that bad of a film.....I would say it's decent. The cast is really good - especially Sam Worthington and of course Bale. I like the tone of the film, the cinematography. I like that it's something different. I like that we finally see an apocalyptic Terminator film.

Problem is.....those are the things that have to carry the film because there is literally no story. We have a character arch with the Sam Worthington character and the film has a nice little message regarding humanity, but there is literally nothing in the film that really advances the story. Nothing feels at stake in the final battle. It's just humans battling robots in a war we already know about. They end up destroying the San Francisco Skynet base, yet Skynet's global system is still strong. The finale means nothing other than an opportunity for a few character moments. It just feels kinda unsatisfying.

they were intending this to be a trilogy. an already thin story was being stretched out to three films.

I've never seen any other Terminator film other than the first and 5th, but from what I have heard and from clips TS seems better than T3. Despite that I have always wondered how Skynet knows about Kyle.
Also to the over-all story it seems dangerous to ever write that Skynet knows who John's father is because he is the most vulnerable being he was a child during most of the war.

As I was watching the movie I had the same question in my mind. :) This is a solid Terminator-flick! Much better than I expected after all the negative reviews. Definitely better than T3 and Genisys, but I could almost say I enjoyed it more than T1.
