Watching this movie,Nat the beginning she has absolutely nothing to do with the baby. Didn't even acknowledge him, when her mum was sleeping through the baby crying she went in and told her mum the baby was crying instead of taking over and she couldn't handle it when she did.
Seemed to me like she wanted everyone to know he was her baby but actually wasn't willing to actually be his mum, just be acknowledged that she was his mum.
In no way did she ever step up, except when she finally decided to give him up for adoption.
If she wanted to be responsible for him, she would have helped her mum out and stepped in but she pretended he didn't even exist at first.
We do not see her even interact with him until her baby daddy shows up and we actually see her being sweet and playful with the baby, before then there was no real interaction.
The first time she was left alone with him she ran off for help to her teachers and fell asleep on their couch, once again leaving the baby with them, and not stepping up.
