So where was she going again? (Spoilers)

Just saw this film again but came in right at the middle and it's been a while since I saw it.

Love Bai in everything and like this movie (especially the part where she does that awesome dodge-murder of all those pesky men surrounding her, which I've personally done maybe three, four times now on the way into shopping malls myself!)

What I seem to have not understood no matter how many times I watched this though is where exactly she is going in the zeppelin thingy at the end. I can only remember her wanting to earn the tickets to get out of the place she was. But when the camera backs up to show the final shot, it's clear that the planet is a wasteland comprised of a bunch of identical inhabited (craters?) just like the one she's already in.

That's like earning your way into a ticket to go from South Bronx to Watts. Is she trying to get out of the whole area (planet) or are those similar looking craters actually completely different?

Given the horribly muddled writing, plotting, and dialogue, it's never quite clear. But the beginning of the movie says that people were moving to the "walls" of the city (away from the exposed center, I guess.) Best I can tell, the walls are apparently hermetically sealed against the contamination in the atmosphere/open air.

But Josephine confuses things even further by apparently alluding to moving to an entirely different city -- asking to be healed enough to "leave Olympia" to find better treatment -- after the opening voiceover implies that the explosion of Hayden Industries merely contaminated the atmosphere of Olympia. The final shot just confuses things even more in that regard...unless "Olympia" is the name of the world, not the city, and the escape would be interplanetary.

In shory, it's just a mess. It had such potential but failed badly. I actually acquired this movie to watch from time to time to contemplate what it might have been in the hands of a much better writer and director, and with a much better budget.

Also, nude Bai Ling. That never hurts. But I can see that with a simple Google search, so it's mostly just contemplation of what the seeds here might have grown into in a better world.
