Willingly filming a slasher? Hmm...

So, this journalist Taylor and her film crew Todd and the guy who looks like a member of The Big Bang Theory are totally fine with filming a serial killer?? And, who the heck would be okay with watching that knowing that they knew it was going on and were encouraging it?? I've seen documentaries with killers after they've been arrested on 60 min. and such but that's after they've been punished. someone please enlighten me on this subject, is this just a witty play on generic horror themes or is it a major flub in this seemingly "stupidly- smart" spoof? I was thinking about this during the film in its entirity, which just made it all the less enjoyable. I know some viewers were answering this with the fact that they did step in like half way into the film.. Yeah, after two teens are brutally murdered in the next room?! I know, I know, leslie "knew" they would step in and "knew" that Taylor was his "survivor girl" the whole time and they were coming before he'd even laid eyes on them..BLAH BLAH BLAH. I just want to know why this was okay in the first place?! Please answer soon, please! And in advance, please excuse my usage of words and placement. Thank you. :)

Also, did anyone else find that despite small moments of small smart humor that the film was surprisingly straight forward and serious? One final question, did Leslie's character remind anyone else of Jim carrey? (sorry if I spelled his name wrong)

reply

Yea I was thinking Jim Carrey throughout the film...a lot of the same characteristics..

Did Leslie's "mentor" and his wife know that Taylor was the survivor girl the whole time?

reply

Okay, going to try to address some of your concerns, may not be the consensus, but this is my take on it.

First, the big question..why the heck would anyone agree to do this? this is not a rational act, the act of a law-abiding citizen in any normal sense, as it is abetting and becoming to some extent accessory to murder, tacitly before the fact and definitely after the fact. BUT, having said that, the characters are film students trying to make a documentary, trying to make something stand out, and seeing documentary makers around them skirt ethical behavior and getting award nominations, grants, and sponsorships, so their possibly being tempted can be a little more undesrstandable, at least to the point of being pushed into a viable 'suspension of disbelief' territory. Having scouted such people, finding his survivor girl there, Leslie may have approached them to start with, it's never clear how the team and Leslie got connected, even though we see their first meeting in the film, it is with some foreknowledge.

The film is a satire and therefore, the humor is more contextual than funny, the way that we see a 'science of the slasher movie villain' and the breakdown of the rules and concepts, even to the inclusion of their opponents and their roles, i.e., Ahab, Survivor Girl, etc... this is where the humor lies, and adding to that, the commentary on documentary makers willing to put themselves in morally indefensible positions to get their films made (referring back to the first paragraph) not so much a bit of humor as social satire without mirth.

Did Eugene and his wife know that Taylor was the survivor girl? this is not outright spoken, but i'm reasonably certain they did, the hints are small but there...Eugene's comment about 'i like her', and there was a strangely 'big sister' kind of vibe that i got from his wife towards Taylor, a looking in a mirror reflecting the past and hoping that the girl will rise to the challenge.

on a side note, if you can watch the dvd, you see a few moments in the deleted scenes that make it a bit clearer that Leslie and Eugene's characters are not to be taken entirely seriously (notably the 'why doesn't the killer run' scene, and eugene's listing of the various ways he's 'seemed to die', including decapitation.)

Thank you for your answer! Thinking of it in a more humorous manor helped a lot. :)

Also remember that in this film, Freddy and Michael and Jason are 'real'

reply

*beep* jesus! cant people just have a bit of fun watching movies anymore? *beep* losers!!! it's a film!
you want realism? stick with documentaries.

nice marmot.

reply

You're right. Movies and books are made to make us lose that sense of reality. Too many reality shows have influenced the culture way too much.

Excuse me for wanting to understand something. If you didn't want to read questions, I'd suggest not going to the message board. *beep*... I mean *beep* off.

reply

I'll admit, it's been some time since I've seen this, but I don't remember any killing happening until the end. I was under the impression they weren't entirely convinced of his "nature".

They're supposed to be film students (a nod to 'The Blair Witch Project', maybe?) If you've ever known film students, you'll know that's an answer...
