Wood skills all but lost in today's society

I find it truly amazing that "Dick" was able to gather all the skills from the past. Did he just pick them up in his various employment? To myself, what he accomplished through the many years, still amazes me. At 64 and fit, I wish I was able to learn some of the wood construction techniques "Dick" knew.

Not just wood working skills, but survival skills in general. I know that if this movie were about me being alone in the wilderness, it would be a 30 second short with a narrator saying something like “He went into the wilderness alone … and was dead a week later.” And a week is being generous.

He was a carpenter in the Navy so I'm sure he learned a lot there.

I would not live past a week either. Some bear will eat me.

Deep respect for people who can survive like this.
