The Lottery
If we used the scenario the movie presented (and forget about the obvious blood bank answer that was mentioned earlier) how would the governments of the world react?
Would ANY nation really offer a lottery for it's share? Especially one (if I understood it correct) that noble as the one in the movie where USA didn't use their prisoners for the quota but had a general lottery. And who in their right mind would think such a lottery would be fair? Would the president and his family really be in that lottery? Would rich influental people really be picked?
But if we really want to be realistic, if the world would have to pick a couple of million people to sacrifice i'm absolutly sure that a continent like Africa would be forced to contribute the whole amount by the west thru the world bank in exchange for loans and trades.
Wonder if they would pick from the millions of HIV/AIDS infected people and if so, they would most definetly be rejected by the aliens.
In a different question, how would you pick the 8 million?
For such a low number it seems like a simple answer. Pick all the serious offenders in prision, the murderers, rapist, pedophiles etc. And if that is not enough to get up to 8 million (one would think it would be enough) you can pick the rest from the terminally ill that would die anyway. Or just pick from the people over 100 years of age.
Am I to cynical? Or just a realist?
