Why was the Asian dad happy at the end?

Throughout the whole film the Asian father is shown as being absolutely ruthless with his son in pursuit of the title, yet at the end they both win and share the trophy and the Asian dad is shown as being happy and delighted with that result?

This doesn't add up with the way he was behaving throughout the film. It's clear that he wants his son to win and not only win but win by being head and shoulders above the competition, so why is he happy with the trophy being shared with someone else?

Asians are extreamly evil.

His son said he never won at anything, maybe he considered tying for the trophy winning?

Personally, I think a tie is acceptable, especially since this is the National Scripps Spelling Bee. That is not a small task to accomplish. I would accept an Oscar or Tony Award if I were to win by a tie. Barbra Streisand won her Oscar by a tie. A lot of people forget that.

Akeelah warmed Dylan's dad's heart just like she did the audience.

His son won, that's all the mattered.
