the theatre scene

Can anyone explain the theatre scene where Kenya and her parents and her brother are watching two performers on the stage who have a lot of body contact in their performance. Why does Kenya react to it the way she does?

reply

I always felt it that the sensuality, the gyrations, and her libido made her react. Her character hadn't had a date in 2 years...she was aroused.

Finally got some sort of interpretation to that scene. I have seen the movie twice and both times I just couldn't pinpoint why she reacted like that. My only thought was that she was definitely thinking about Brian doing those things to her when she was watching the performance. Or am I wrong with that train of thought?

reply

You are not wrong, Princess. At least not in my opinion. That's exactly how I had taken it, since ten minutes earlier in the film she was shown watching Brian work outside and she had that same aroused look on her face.

I don't even remember the scene you all are referencing. I need to revisit this movie; it's been so long.

Excuse me--ya'll lookin' for a dead body??

reply

More than likely, yes. She was aroused and he was in her head.

I think she was lonely. She wanted to be attached, but she was picky. She snubbed Brian on their blind date because of his color and concerned about what other blacks would think of her being with him. When he started working for her, she had to let down some of her guard. She was attracted to him. Watching the "sex" between the dancers made her think of him and I think she was beginning to think "why not" in her head. Her longing was palpable.
