How did this film end? Spoiler

How did this film end? Seeing Asia in the last scene with the fire meant that she was the "Last mistress" and the flame of desire goes on between them? The wife told the husband that someone had died, who was this? Was it a former lover or was it her grandmother, his grandmother-in-law / Hermangarde's grandmother? He was upset whoever it was and I was wondering why he was so broken up about this persons death, esp if it was just a casual fling and mistress after Asia? can some one break down the ending for me. Thanks, What a fantastic film I believes it is the best to date!

The film ends with Ryno and Vellini back together after he finally decides to do what he wants, not what he and society thinks is right. The sad note is that he and society (the gossipy couple) knows that his constant attempts to deny what he wants not only wasted his time but destroyed the lives of the other people he loved, and who loved him.

Good point I agree with this and also....

I just watched the deleted scenes - extras on the region 2 european DVD and
actress Sarah Pratt who plays the Aristocrat "Countess De Mendoze" is the one who died. Ryno's wife tells him of this and this is why he is sad. This was the 1st time he cheated on Vellini (Asia Argentos's character) it was with the "Countess De Mendoze".

In a deleted scene on the Region 2 DVD "Countess De Mendoze" was opposite the chapel as Rynos wife was on the alter getting married, was was crying making peace with letting her lover, Ryno go. Asia Argento's character - Vellini comes into scene and feels the need to confront the Countess De Mendoze saying we were both Rynos lovers trying to "one upo her", and in the course of the argument, the Countess De Mendoze starts to cough and become sick, Asia's character Vellini takes the Countess De Mendoze out of scene by holding her up like shes about to faint with a concerned care.

This scene should have been left in and Catherine does not state why she left it out. for her English viewer it was hard to follow with this scene missing!

I had seen this film at the Toronto Premiere and no one there got it either! it took me until I seen this Euro DVD extras to get the whole story cleared. the Last Mistress is Vellini Asias Character, thats why they show her near the flames in the final scene of the premier version.
