What makes you think Catherine Breillat meant for it all to be invisible. Maybe she wanted a splash of danger, or ugly, to appear in scenes.
Whatever your opinion of tattoos is, you have to be blind to art of filmmaking to insist that movies need be be 100% BBC-ish "to period" all the time.

Still reeling from my rather conservative suggestion that his behavior was on the sociopathic end of the spectrum, I guess. Have no idea what issues he's bringing up now, maybe something about how I remind him of a uncle who molested him.
