I could had did without the poop shot....

that was the one thing for me too. i don't understand it. it needlessly stood out from the rest of the film.

The other thing could be that we kind of share Yang Yang's embarrassment.

reply

yes, first I thought it was a bit too much. But
later I realized that Takata and Yang Yang built a strong bond based on that scene. (Takata sqreezed his nose to make fun of Yang Yang and made him laugh; and did it again later during the farewell scene)
Also Takata was taking pictures of Yang Yang to show his Dad later, so I thought it's appropriate.

reply

It was gross but strangely necessary. It showed the dynamics of Yang Yang and Takata's relationship before and after he did the "do". Before, Yang Yang was annoyed with Takata. Afterwards, it became the turning point and they bonded.

What would Yang Yang have done had Takata not shared his napkins?

"Takata was taking pictures of Yang Yang to show his Dad later, so I thought it's appropriate."

If there's anything less appropriate than showing a father photos you took of his child taking a crap, I don't know what it is.

All joking aside, I can definitely see where people are coming from in not wanting to see it: at first I was wtfing as well, but I soon realized that it was a necessary scene, for character development as well as emotional attachment to the characters themselves.

Everything is less acceptable in the US. Its pooping, happens all the time :) Nothing to get all weird about. I have to admit, it was odd, but i didnt really get bothered by it. Guess you get used to weird *beep* (no pun intended) when you've watched alot of non-american movies.

Go check out shortbus, its american and extremely culturally unacceptable ;)

There is a similar scene in one of Wim Wenders's films.
(I think it is 'Kings of the Road' ('Im Lauf der Zeit') which one IMDb reviewer characterized as "Wenders's best"). The...uh... performer was an adult.
The difference was that at least as far as I could see the shot fulfilled no function other than to depict an ordinary act whereas in Zhang Yimou's film
it was a crucial turning point as others have noted above.
(According to a couple of IMDb reviewers the Wenders film also featured
a shot of a character masturbating but that one somehow escaped my notice :-) )

Now I feel better about defending this scene. At least it was a child (think babies and diapers and it served as a crucial purpose in the story.

I've got a love-hate thingy with Geico Cavemen

omg everyone takes a sh%t, get over it.

Yeah but I really didn't need to actually see it though. .

Anyway in america they sh#t all over foreign movies they are called REMAKES.

reply

I thought it was hilarious. They didn't need to actually show the poop but you know what Jack Burton always says...... What the hell!

reply

Yeah, I could've swore they went a little overboard with that poop scene. And it wasn't just the image of the kid trying to take a dump, it was the way the Japanese guy was so INSISTENT on capturing it all on camera. Oh well, male bonding manifests itself in mysterious ways, I guess. lol

But hey, at least they didn't have the kid's poopoo examined by the Royal Poo Sniffer like they did in "The Last Emperor". lol

reply

Yeah, totally useless, that was our little what-the-*beep*-? moment. I thought the film was disappointing anyway, even though I like Zhang Yimou and Japan, and that the idea of a film binding the two countries seemed highly promising.

And I've seen that Wenders's film too ! Not only was it bad but that scene was awful. Those directors are still in the anal stage.

Hell yeah! why some directors forces us to watch something that NOBODY does in the real life?

I am tired of this kind of directors who likes to show unrealistic and disgusting things like pooping, instead of good ol' giant monsters ripping apart human beings!

*sarcasm*

it might tickle western sensitivities a bit, but it's just a bit of simple humour that also acts to show the progression of bonding between the two, and add a common true-to-life touch to the film. if you watch european and asian cinema, you will find many instances of nudity or other slightly uncomfortable scenes to those of us brought up in north america and britain.

Hey, don't include us in your hang-ups, Stolov; many of us here in Britain have bodies, you know, with normal bodily functions. It's only in the US that such things seem to be too horrifying to contemplate.

Oh, and last time I looked out of the window Britain was in Europe, actually.

Just teasing. A lovely, lovely film, goes high on my list of favourites.

reply

it made the movie.

reply

simply brilliant scene and it almost did the film indeed.
