Hmm... I'd bet dollars to donuts that the OP was one of the first people in line to watch the Spider-Man origin story all over again.
I watched this movie last night and thought it was positively beautiful; one of the most touching portraits of humanity I've had the pleasure to come across in cinema. When they say that sometimes it's more about the journey than the destination, this is what they mean. A story of lost connections, missed opportunities, and what it's like to discover how important it is to find them again. So moving. I cried my eyes out straight through the third act of this film. Perhaps being a parent, myself, helped me truly find its poignancy.
Here we are now in 2012. I can't for the life of me figure out how this movie came out in 2005 and I never knew about it, especially as a big fan of the work of Zhang Yimou. I truly believe he's at his best when creating these intimate little character portraits and showing us such beautiful reflections of what it means to be human. This movie ranks right up there with "To Live," "Raise the Red Lantern," "The Story of Qiu Jiu," "The Road Home," and "Not One Less," in my book.
