na hanyate, by maitreyi devi. "hum dil de chuke sanam" was definitely inspired by maitreyi's story; too bad sanjay leela bhansali never mentioned this anywhere.

I recall 1998's Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa, an adaptation of Mahasweta Devi's eponymous novel, which I own but have yet to watch. The book was excellent, well-written, and poignant; the movie, I heard, retain many of its qualities.

I searched for Rabindranath Tagore on IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0007173/) and found quite a few adaptations from his works, most notably 1961's Teen Kanya (Three Daughters), 1964's Charulata (The Lonely Wife), and 1984's Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) by the world-renown Satyajit Ray (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006249/).

If you want to find more, just do as I did: search for your favorite authors and see what pops up!
