Why would someone carry a soap pump in their purse? That seemed too contrived.

Of course Richard misunderstood, and thought it was "hand soap".. that is part of the character.
I carry hand sanitizer everywhere I go, and I am far from a germaphobe.
There are much more interesting things to discuss about the movie that don't involve hand soap.

Abby's feeling of guilt from Amy's death. They were only 8 years old, yet they made a pact to drown together. Abby swam back, and waited for hours, hoping that Amy would swim back and appear, yet she didn't.
She spent months afterwards in the "looney bin" Abby says softly, through tears "I can't imagine how we were so unhappy..."
Forget hand soap, I want to know more of the story. I would love a prequel and a sequel to this movie.
