Ripoff of Another Movie?

Is it just me or is this movie alot like the movie "The Core" that came out a couple of years ago? From what I could tell from the previews for "Descent", it deals with some sort of natural phenomenon causing the Earth to fall apart and a team of scientists drilling to the center of the Earth in some sort of subterranean vehicle to keep it from being destroyed. This is basically the same thing that happened in "The Core". I'm not trying to be a troll or anything, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I just saw that preview during a commercial break while watching Frighteners, and thought the same thing. They don't give many details on exactly what they're trying to do once the drill deep into the Earth, and that probably added to my impression that it was a The Core ripoff. I mean, they could have thrown in a couple plot devices that would have made it seem somewhat original.

I'm not saying that the film will be a total ripoff of The Core, but the people who decided what went into the previews didn't help coerce the public into believing otherwise.

reply

yah - its a cheap dupe of The Core.

reply

yeah that's the exact thing i thought too...THE CORE! we'll watch it but with skeptical eye

reply

Yup, I also thought of The Core as well.

While 'The Core' was an excellent film, garnering Oscar nominations for editing and post production, 'Descent' is by no means a rip off of that film. Based on the true story about an Antarctican rescue mission to stave off increasing seismic activity and the growing probability of an Extinction Level Event, 'Descent' stays true to actual events; including the on board romance between moleologist Dr. Jack Rollens (Antarctican) and sex kitten subsurface vehicle designer Dr. Sandy East (Canadian). The phenomena occurred in Summer, 1993 and, according to author Perry Lukas in his book "They Cut The Cheese", the world was never told of the imminent danger it faced and that this intrepid crew set out to alleviate. Nor are the men lost, 5 in all, remembered by many for the bravery they exhibited "sub surface where true beauty lies." The screenplay for 'Descent' was originally picked up by Paramount and was to have starred Dennis Weaver and Tippi Hedren until that studio was forced to sell off the rights. In the end I'm sure that similarities can be badly drawn between 'Descent' and 'The Core', but 'Descent' has the meat of reality on it's bones while 'The Core' was simply worm infested fairy tale.

Good grief, Louis. In order to convey a message, satire must at least present a barely recognizable indication of its target. It must also be well-written. Your posting accomplishes neither objective.

Dude... it is a TOTAL RIPOFF of The Core....

Give me a break....

Its also a ripoff of "Deep Core", another SCIFI original movie. Actually, "Deep Core" was made before "The Core", so its a ripoff too.

They didn't brother to come up with a new tagline.

To be fair people, the father of all these films was Crack in the World (1965) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059065/combined

And "Deep Core" is a rip off of "Deep Deep Core". :)

reply

Antarctican? WTF is that? Moleologist? SANDY EAST!!!! Geez, where did you dig out Dennis Weaver and Tippi Hedren?

Seriously, Luke Perry (Perry Lukas) didn't write a thing. "They Cut The Cheese" was written by Georges Emmentaler, and is available at amazon.com.

I'm amazed that nobody remembered "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" by Jules Verne, when speaking of rip-offs.

And it's very real that the only (American) solution to problematic seismic events is to detonate something BIG, nuclear if possible. How retarded is that... All major seismic problems are caused by nuclear explosions, especially the sub-level ones.

Jesus Christ, are you serious???? The Core was anything but an excellent movie, it was mediocre at best, it had bad acting, the FX were so poor, it´s not even worth talking about, and the dialogue wasn´t worth the paper it was written on. Now about Descent, i haven´t seen it yet, but i don´t think it will be any better, and on top of all, it has Luke Perry on it, how good can it be with an actor like that? :)
So my hopes are that the movie won´t stay long at the theatre, go quickly to video, and people will forget about…

It was obviously a ripoff verbatim of 2 movies.

The premise is a ripoff of The Core
The scenes are a ripoff of Armageddon

What this movie lacked was decent dialog and believable emotion. Also the sets were as bad as some early Doctor Who!

jesus, this movie should be shown in schools as "How cheap, terrible, low and dumb ripoff of a not-too-good movie can be made"

even the music seems similiar to armageddon in few scenes, hey, even the lines are sometimes the same or similiar ("We're gonna dril", "Basically, we are threatened by what bible describes as armageddon" LOL)...

This movie just shouldn't happen

One of the worst movies I have ever seen, is it worse than Sahara, I dont know but they both suck big time. Definite rip-off of the vastly superior "Core", even "At the Earths Core" with Doug Mclure was more enjoyable and they had a better digging machine.

One of those films where you think no that can,t be it surely, nothing happened, a great steaming pile of poo!!!!!

reply

I was like, wow. this is so much like the core movie...

well if they pop out in the ocean im going to be pissed.

and WHAT do they do...

Most movies made by the SyFy channel nowadays are low budget ripoffs/remakes of other films. Case in point: after the new "The Day The Earth Stood Still" came out, SyFy made "The Day The Earth Stopped" with C. Thomas Howell. I guess there must be such a lack of programs that they need to make pathetic filler.

1. Both involve the core F%cking up in some sort of way.
2. They both involve a team of trained professionals to go down to the core in a subermine-like vehicle.
3. Both films have the female captain and the other male main character as the only survivers
4. Both films have similar musical scores.
5. A crapton of other things.

I have El Sonoma del Torra de Fiero Syndrome. Be happy you don't. Trust me.
