Cameron should have hired Neill Blomkamp

Rodriguez just doesn’t have “it” anymore. If he ever really did at all.
Neill Blomkamp would of at least done better with the CGI/FX.

Blomkamp would have turned it into some preachy, heavy-handed, cliche liberal propaganda. Filled with indiscernible, shaky camerawork to boot. I much prefer Rodriguez's more fun, less shaky-cammy approach.

reply

You do realize that Machete (which Rodriguez directed) was preachy, heavy-handed, cliche liberal propaganda for illegal immigration, right?

reply

Maybe, but one should not forget that Machete WAS a homage to the sleazy exploitation films of the 70's. Those movies often had really loud, overt political messages to them (especially the blaxploitation ones). Rodriguez may have just been aiming for that.

Besides, I don't really have a problem with a filmmaker expressing his/her political beliefs. My problem with the idea of Blomkamp directing is that he most likely would have turned Alita into yet ANOTHER cautionary tale about the evil of capitalism. He would have taken the idea of the rich and the poor living in completely different cities to make some really obvious, ham-fisted allegories to our current world, similar to what he did in Elysium.

And even ignoring all that political stuff, he's not a good pick for this material anyway. The guy would have probably gone for a grittier, more realistic sorta approach. Haven't we had enough of that shit by now? I much prefer Rodriguez's more direct translation of the source material.

Thanks! Thought it was wrong, but didn’t care enough to edit/delete.

Implying that Rodriguez was responsible for the effects? If that’s so, then that is incorrect. The CGI and overall effects were provided by a very reliable (to put it mildly) visual effects company/ies. They’ve done everything from Lord of the Rings to Avatar. So Rodriguez or no Rodriguez, Cameron would’ve hired the same team to do the visuals effects. Yes, James Cameron. We don’t need a history lesson on this guy, do we?

They used some innovative techniques when it came to Alita’s effects and, as far as I’m concerned, it really showed. The effects are being praised by most people.

reply

The effects seem to be the strong point of the movie.

reply

I thought that would be the case too, but it's a stupendously emotional ride with very realistic, very nicely fleshed out characters.

It's also downright beautiful, some of the best action ever put onscreen, intelligent and deep...

I mean yes, the effects are stunning, but the movie itself is amazing. Of course, it IS a time-tested classic manga/anime story.

reply

I mean Rodriguez seems to be more okay with shitty CGI in his movies than Blomkamp seems to be. Directors have a lot to say on if something is good enough or not. Understand?

reply

Just look at how shitty the films movie poster looks.

reply

It was indeed a shitty poster. All the ads and trailers failed the movie, too. I had seen previews but they didn't hint at what kind of movie it was, they only highlighted parts they thought people wanted to see.

Thank you. English is a beautiful language, for those who know it.

And then there is the internet . . .

Not to mention the difference between the possessive and plural forms: “films” [sic] versus “film’s.”

Yeah, troglodyte poster, it DOES freaking matter.

That better, buddy?

Rodriguez is hired as a competent yes man nowadays. He can't even get funding for his own passion projects and has to take a paint by numbers film to direct, like Alita.

The board of suits give him a paint by numbers page and say there you go and Rodriguez says yes, competently directs without much flare because he isnt given enough leeway to bring any flair, he brings it in on time on budget.

Thats his thing now for studio movies.
