Trailer:

Director: Robert Rodriguez
Written by James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez and Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island)
Release: July 20th, 2018

I know Cameron has been sitting on this for a long time and there are many fans of the manga which this movie is based on. I know one of the things that will immediately noticeable are her eyes, but I have heard from readers of the manga that this is probably by design. She's made from spare parts and is constantly referred to condescendingly as a "doll" and discriminated against.

Her large eyes took me by surprise too but I started to get used to it with a second viewing, with the understanding that she is probably supposed to be off-putting to us (that's why she was mistreated and discarded).

About time this came around. I still remember Cameron talking about making this at a Q&A after a screening of Terminator 2, before Alita got ditched and replaced with Avatar.

I guess he wanted to do more with the performance capture technology than just one character.

But in the anime, EVERYONE had big eyes. Big eyes AREN'T supposed to be a defining oddity. They turned a common feature in anime into a freakish feature. In the anime, Alita did NOT have abnormally large eyes compared to everyone else.

This is wrong. By only giving Alita big eyes, they've unnecessarily turned her into a freak.

reply

James Cameron seems to disagree with your assessment.

I don't think I will be able to get used to the eyes, its almost too cartoon like. Maybe over time I will get used to it, but I don't think it was a wise creative decision.

Rather awe-inspiring. Since my first viewing of the trailer, I appreciated what they did with Alita’s eyes. It made her more unique looking and she stood out in the best possible way, if you ask me. Perhaps this decision can be seen as utterly pointless, but I’m finding it effective. Also the whole trailer, which grabbed my complete attention the first time, gets better the more I watch it.

I like what I see so far.
