Sounds like a rip off of South Central.

Or American History X. Only substitute neo-Nazism for gangs.

This is not like American History X at all. Its more like South Central. Sorry rigosmagic but I don't think this is gonna win too many awards if any. It was alright. Wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

incredibly subpar movie, i was extremely disappointed.

tonight the bay's a pane of glass - let's break it.

Jesus, you need to either start watching a wider variety of film or stop attending Klan meetings. I had never heard of the bloody movie when I wandered into a screening of it. After watching for about 15 minutes I was impressed by the film, especially considering how well the director managed the balance between true cinematic artistic expression and typical blaxploitation film. Considering the typical trash produced for a predominately "Urban" audience (I use the term to encompass so-called Wiggers as well as the target African-American audience), this film was excellent. I admit it wasn't a Training Day or Do The Right Thing, but it wasn't anywhere close to subpar.

reply

The "Klan meetings" reference was totally uncalled for. Just because it is a "black" movie with a deep theme doesn't give it a free ride.

I felt the movie did an atrocious job of telling the story it was trying to tell. The characters never felt real. Maybe I just don't understand that culture but the good storytellers bring out the humanity in the characters so that any can relate on some level.

In addition the lighting was terrible. Whenever any black characters were on the screen it was impossible to see their facial expressions. Perhaps this contributed to my difficulty in relating to them.

reply

wow, did you honestly just accuse me of attending Klan meetings because I said the movie was subpar? are you black? let's just assume you are, there is still no reason for you to jump down my throat for that. do you know what the word "Klan" means? what it represents? I would advise you to not throw it around as you did with me. especially in the real world. it's not a word to be taken lightly, or tossed around like any old word.

as far as my movie tastes, I'm not sure how you can further accuse me of being interested in movies targeted for the "Urban audience." you don't know me, and the 50 or so movies I've rated thus far on this site don't indicate that those are the types of movies I am even interested in. I don't care how intelligent you are or how eloquent you made your post sound. you are ignorant. completely and utterly ignorant.

so, you were impressed by the film? it has a message, sure, and a fine one, but there are movies that have done a MUCH better job in relaying that message to the audience (me). I am glad you found this enjoyable, but I can't see how you enjoyed the film. the film. that is what's up for discussion right now. not the message. the delivery of the film _was_ incredibly subpar. in fact, it was one of the worst movies I've seen all year. a film could have the a grandiose and beautiful message, but if the director can't find a real or convincing way to convey it to the audience (me) then he has failed as a director.

well, it has been about 8 yrs since you posted this message, and it looks like its been 7 yrs since your last message ever on IMDB, but just want to let you know that I have found a wonderful new band by happenstance in searching your posts signiture, so thanks for that. best story for a bands title, ever:

"How was the date?","well, you know that 70s show B.J. and the bear? it was like that, minus the bear"

true to theory Oscars seem evident for this depiction of the life of a crime lord. Yet, also evident is the fact that this is a B movie with and A story. Ving did not play his best role here. Don't get me wrong I loved the movie but think realisticly here.

Actually worse than going straight to DVD, it was made for DVD - therefor its ineligible (nominees are not allowed to screen on home video/dvd for their first public exhibition)

No way this is going to win anything. It was Ok, but not Oscar worthy.

^ im sure people will follow that (incredibly biased) opinion and advice.

this movie sucks. just my two cents. how can this director keep casting such great actors in such dreck? he just made the timberlake movie which is [also] straight to video.. its a shame cos usually good acting can even shine through in crap films but its like the actors knew what bs this was and didnt even care after a while ..

reply

Message was amazing, but the directing could use some work. But I understand that this movie was independant and he did what he could with what he had.

Another movie where living a life of crime and violence in the 'hood leads to eventual problems, parents begging their kids to not lead lives of crime, "the man" aka willie lych keeping the black man down....

Someone in hollywood must have had some pictures of Terrence Howard and Ving Rhames dancing naked on a table in a gay bar or something to get them to make this movie. I am sure Terrence Howard is glad he doesn't have to make movies like this now that he is a big star. It was just a cliche gansta movie about the obvious reprecussions of self destructive behavior, but with good leading actors.
