I have never seen this show until now...

I am watching season 16 on Hulu and what a bunch of unlikable f v c k s! There are *maybe* four contestants who aren't completely awful. Is every season like this? Are the contestants usually this bad or is this like any other reality show where sometimes you get a good bunch and sometimes a rotten bunch?

Mixed bag. Some seasons have had a bunch of decent contestants, others have been like this season with very few likeable contestants.

Most of the time there are 4-5 that they pretty much expect to make it to the end from the start with lately there being pretty much two favourites for the finale being pretty obvious from the get go.

Everyone else is there for Drama. If you are an obnoxious @$$hat who cranks up the drama at every turn you can go a long way on that alone in these shows but you just can't make it to the end.

The last two seasons have been pretty bad with unlikable contestants who also are not very good.

They are definitely casting awful MALE chefs over the last 5 seasons. Used to be there was some balance with the male and female chefs, but anymore, all you have to do is look at The Red Team to spot your winner. The guys are just cast as fodder, and none of them can cook.

If you watch Top Chef, you will see much more balance between the women and the men.

Regardless, since season 1, the show has been cast for drama. They usually cast 2 chefs who are meant to reach the finale and everyone else is cast for drama and their inability to get along with others.

I see! I am enjoying the show, but yeah, the cast is kind of eek. I watched most of the last season of MasterChef but couldn't stand Christine Tosi or whatever her name is so I switched to Hell's Kitchen.

Would not shock me at all if there's a plant that Ramsey has personally selected before the show even starts to win it all.

Ramsay is, of course, one of the best chefs in the world. He is not a TV producer. He knows to defer to TV people when he is making most TV shows for ratings. Hell's Kitchen is a perfect example. Ramsay has stated publicly https://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/2013/05/hells-kitchen-1-ramsay-casting/ that 50% of the contestants are cast for drama alone; 50% are cast for talent. IMO the casting is more like 80% drama, 20% talent. This is a crap reality TV show. It has very little to do with cooking ability. You only need to investigate the fate of former winners to discover that. Few have made a name for themselves in the culinary arts world. If you want to watch cooking ability, watch Masterchef Australia or Top Chef. Even those have other elements influencing choice of the winner.

If you want to watch a really fine Gordon Ramsay presentation that is actually about cooking, check out his Ultimate Cookery Course (Channel 4 UK) series and his Home Cooking (Channel 4 UK) series. There are others he made for Channel 4 that are worthwhile as well.

Thanks for the info! If he is casting (some) people based on drama and the show has no real integrity then why not put some physically attractive people on so we don't have to look at a bunch of fat, sweaty, dumpy slobs? These people are obnoxious and unattractive. Give us *something* at least.  Only one girl is even semi-attractive and she wears clown makeup so it's overkill anyway.

I'm aware that I am being an a-hole but I really don't care. This show is visually accosting. I'll try some Top Chef and see if that's a little better. I appreciate the suggestion.
