Fugitive episode a game changer

Nice surprise, MUCH more interesting kick-ass doctor, timeline mystery. Writers finally redeemed themselves. Love it!

I agree, it was excellent television.

Great to see other people enjoyed it. Even better to see a balance of opinions here (that is, a balance to threads about the episode with “fat” and “black” in the title, for example).

The 7 day wait for the next instalment is killing me, and honestly I haven’t felt that way about the show for quite a few years. Genuine intrigue and excitement, it’s a good time to be a fan.

reply

Yeah was a great episode. Only thing I'd have liked to have seen is more of the Judoon

reply

Agreed! I liked them.

reply

Fo! Sho! No!

I think we saw just the right amount of the horny old buggers. Great to see them again but let’s be honest they were a plot device for the main story, which was told fairly economically as it was considering the size of the reveal. Any more rhino would have been too much.

reply

Just felt like they got forgotten about. Probably my favourite episode this series and 11

reply

Definitely mine 👍

reply

Me, too! Let’s get back to it. Not sure why the next 3? episodes acted like it never happened. It’s like they aired it out of order. Will finale bring 2nd doctor back?

reply

It sadly is a problem with an arc. Give you something good then just drop it like it never happened until the finale.

I did find series 5 got the balance the best adding new stuff as the series went. I mean series 6 basically had the doctor saying something like should we find out more or just go on an adventure

reply

Exactly. I can get going to the Cybermen story bc I’m assuming it’ll link up, but you have to weave in/acknowledge that surprise! And wasn’t the ep after the introduction of the 2nd doctor not related in any way to anything? I don’t get it.

reply

Rewatched this again today and struck by how much I still enjoyed it, even without the surprise of the massive reveal.

I really hope we learn more about the origins of Jo Martin’s Doctor in season 13. Proper intrigue!

Truly one of the greatest episodes in the show’s entire run. A solid 9.5/10 for me.

reply

Yeah I was surprised how quick Ruth became the doctor for me in just those few scenes at the end.

I'm not a massive 13 fan although she grew on me in series 12. I think it's mainly because she was played very one note in series 11, which seemed over excited and bubbly. Apparently Jodie wanted to bring different stuff to the character but was told not to.

The moment that really made me see her as the doctor was the end of the Mary shelley episode where she basically kind of talked people down, telling them even though they are a team she was always higher up at the top.

It's a shame it seems 99 percent certain Ruth is a past doctor as I'd love to see her as the next incarnation. Also really love the classic vibe tardis console room

reply

I loved the design of the fugitive Doctor’s TARDIS too Pete. Slick.

As for Jodie, I don’t think any actor before her (with the possible exception of poor old Col Baker) has had their every move so closely scrutinised and over-analysed and unfairly derided. She’s not my favourite Doctor either, for what it’s worth, but she’s really done nothing to deserve the blasting she’s had so I think to criticise her further is just to add another voice to the white noise of anger and hate. I don’t see much point in it. In her defence she ranks far above Capaldi for me and I’m glad she was brave enough to weather the storm of online hate for as long as she has. She’s a good actress who brought something new to the character which is all any reasonable fan could ask for.

reply

Yeah I do feel sorry for her. She's not had the easiest time, being the first female Doctor was always going to be a tough one. I feel this hatred actually started with Capaldi. People seemed to be constantly talking about his replacement before he'd even had a chance.

reply

I'd challenge this, in my view it did not redeem S12 at all.

Was nice to see the Judoons again, but after the absolute mess S11 was, and how the previous episodes in S12 held up, this was... certainly not better.

The ONLY element this had going for it was the other Doctor, and on its own the scenes between them (the two Doctors that is) had an interesting dynamic, they certainly had entertaining banter and it was nice to see them try to unravel the mystery, and then the writers just completely dropped the ball, not explaining anything about this.

The basic theme of the episode was meh, the companions were abysmal as usual (at least Yaz had some lines alluding to the fact that she is police, but that's it), and the appearance of Jack was utterly pointless.

Since the Two Doctors mystery was not resolved, I'd rate this episode 4/10 for a tiny bit of creativity, but otherwise it's back to the same 2/10-3/10 standards of S11 and S12 (so far). The feeling of intrigue over this was extremely fleeting and ultimately, since the show did not care, I also don't really care about the explanation. Would have been nice to have one, mind you, but it comes off too much as a one-off thing, which is a shame, especially considering that later episodes also did not provide any more information on this. It's sad that this has to be regarded as a high point in S12, but that clearly shows the overall quality of the season...

reply

I thought it was a great episode but if I remember rightly did 13 have to tell Yaz she was a police officer. Like it sounds like a great idea having a police officer travel, someone who might know how to deal with certain situations, mediate etc. but that's my problem with Chibnall, he underuses all the potentials.

One of the issues also with arcs is they tend to give you something big and then decide to go on some adventures and ignore them.

reply

Yes. That we now have the advantage of multiple episodes since we saw the other doctor, with absolutely NOTHING else told about her, we can see now what a disappointment it was. Sigh. I hope Chibnall steos aside. He has no idea what he can do with the show.

reply

I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Chibs bows out at the same time as Jodie. Perhaps the show’s current run is nearing its end too. I mean 13 seasons is an incredibly long run for any series these days, let alone a sci-fi show with a 60 year history.

Even if that does happen I firmly believe that it’s a story that will never end and we’ll see it revived again. It captures the hearts and imaginations of its fan base like nothing else, bar perhaps Star Trek.

Long live the Doc ✊

I don't want the show to end but think it might need a break at some point. I don't hate 13 as some do but I'm not a massive fan and wouldn't be keen if that was where the show left audiences for a while.

I have however noticed that the show possibly doesn't bring in newer audiences like it did back in 05/06/. I was born in 89 but got into the show before it returned thanks to my dad. When the show returned, you'd see children playing doctor who outdoors, and it was nice to see a show that no one really seemed to know about grow in popularity all of a sudden. But those children have grown up and the show doesn't seem to be able to attract the same age range again. I suppose everything has its time.

Part of me however wonders if the shows history also plays a part. I mean any show with a long history is going to be off-putting to newer people. I mean apart from the Daleks, most non fans won't even probably know who the master is. So maybe a break at some point might help, and bring in newer people, with less baggage.

Part of me questions if the timeless child fixes or adds to this problem. It can either be seen as a clean slate in a way, as it basically changes a lot and possibly makes some things not as important. However it could also be seen as adding to the problem, by adding more backstory to a show that already has a lot of history. While I've always preferred Moffat over Davies, I do like what he did with the Time War, having a lot of stuff happen during the shows hiatus but stuff that wasn't in classic who, so it was new to everyone.
