I only like three eras of Doctor Who

Namely:

The John Nathan-Turner stuff
The Russell T Davies stuff
and lastly
All of the 1970s stuff

I don't give a damn about Doctor Who in the 1960s, and certainly not the Moffat and Chinballs stuff.

So to me, Doctor Who is over and I can keep the good stuff.

reply

This is me with so many properties. If they go on too long they get old and worn out, rambling around or jumping the shark with rocket-fueled water skis.

I love Watchmen, and I'm ignoring the Before Watchmen comics and the TV show.

I love Star Wars, I'm content with the original three films.

Head canon is a beautiful thing.

What is it about those eras you love?

"What is it about those eras you love?"
I grew up with the JNT era of Doctor Who, namely Doctors 5-7. 6 was my personal favourite.
I had never seen an episode of 1970s Who, until I decided to rent all of the DVDs over the span of around a year. Great retro times!
When Doctor Who came back in 2005, I liked the stories and characters of RTD Who, with the occasional stand-out Moffat monsters, and I personally loved David Tennant. The Specials of 2009 not so much, but it was when weird-headed Smith came in with Moffat with his increasingly over-complicated story arcs and annoying characters like Amy and Clara, I tuned out bit by bit.

That's because you are an old sack of poop....

reply

Ok Coomer.

reply

Yup. I detest opinions that are based on childhood nostalgia.

reply

Why? Most people love the Star Wars OT which they saw as kids, so why shouldn't I like what Doctor Who I grew up with?

reply

No one said you can't. The problem is everyone wants the same experience and base their dislike on that. You will never, ever get that experience again as an adult. You just wont. You can chase it all you want but those feelings just won't be the same no matter what they create.

reply

That's the point, I don't want them to create any more. Why they feel the need to create more and more stuff for existing franchises than just create new franchises completely is beyond me. Everything has a lifespan, and Doctor Who's, Star Trek's, and Star Wars', reached their ends (or supposedly did so) decades ago. What has come out in the last decade is these franchises In Name Only.

reply

Look I like new stuff as well. I have not like much new Star Trek since Enterprise but I'm hoping Picard will be good. There are always stories that can be told in that universe. As for different shows. We have had some great ones in the last 15 years or so. Farscape is probably my favorite Non Star wars and Star Trek in the last 20-30 years....

reply

Never saw Farscape, didn't like the look of the puppets. Babylon 5 is what I preferred, to be honest.

reply

I first thought the same thing. But oh man it was good. The ship itself was a living organic creature called a Leviathan. It was as much a character as all the rest of the characters. The characters grow and care about each other. I need to rewatch it soon....

reply

But that is debatable - to some people want more doctor who. As a fan before new who came thanks to my dad, I plan to always watch any new episode because who knows - the great thing about doctor who is you don't have to like every episode, doctor, show runner etc.

I also find these days everyone thinks they can do better but often their ideas tend to be far worse. don't get me wrong I've got ideas but I know i'd never be able to run the show.

reply

I know Doctor Who has SUCKED since 2010 because I've watched every episode since then. I never want to speak from ignorance, but unfortunately, I really do have to put up with some CRAP.

reply

Really. Wasn't that series 5. I thought that was the best series of new who personally

reply

Best series? Not with Matt Smith's oddly-shaped head. I never liked him.

reply

See i went in a bit worried he was too young yet for me he feels one of the oldest doctors. I just feel the age and pain of the doctor in him which for someone so young shows how good of an actor he is.

For me series 5 balanced the arc the best. Before then it was just a word throughout or something similar and then the answer crammed into the 2 part finalie. I loved in series 5 how we got bits of stuff as the series progressed. Wasn't that keen on the silurian 2 parter but loved when the doctor pulls something from the crack and it turns out to be part of the tardis, thought that was a great moment.

Series 6 did go a bit too over the top a bit too much like lost with lots of things going on. However I did find it ballsy to kill the doctor in the first episode pretty early in although we knew he'd get out somehow. The flesh doppelganger things wasn't the best 2 parter but I thought it cleverly worked as a red herring as I instantly thought this would be the doctor that died and not the real one.

I just felt that RTD relied too much on the family drama side of things and Moffat brought some much needed magic and some scifi to the show. To me a Christmas carol is the best christmas special mixing scifi with a classic and also some emotional stuff.

Don't get me wrong both showrunners have their issues and it does seem both had egos at times. Moffat did like to reuse too many stuff and over complicate stuff when simple often works the best. Take blink for example I think its actually a simple idea really and cleverly done. However with the silence I think he tried to reuse that idea on too much of a large scale across multiple series when it worked fine as a standalone but just that. I kind of felt he was always trying to outdo himself and create the next blink often trying too hard to be clever.

Interestingly a few people who often criticised him now miss him now chibnall is in charge

reply

I like all the eras except the one with a woman as the Doctor.

reply

Yeah ! take that women!

reply

I have eras I dislike more than othere but I just keep watching. As long as they make the show I will probably watch as you never know.

For me I get why people don't like Moffat. He could over complicate things and sometimes I felt like he used the same ideas once too many but i felt like he brought the magic back for me and I loved that he tried to bring some sc-fi into the show and liked to play with time.

RTD focused too much on the soap side and I felt like there was some stupid stuff. The problem however for me is both moffat and RTD had strengths but also I think possibly a bit of an ego and had no one to tell them when they had went too far.

I found series 11 was just mainly dull. It had some okay moments but on average it felt too back to basics. I was excited when I heard about the writers room and I'd love to maybe see two show runners who could possibly play off each other

Those are great, I especially enjoyed the Tom Baker doc.

reply

Why not? I say better to like some Doctor Who than none at all. Still plenty to enjoy in those periods, which I agree were peak.

I didn’t care for the convoluted and anticlimactic story arcs in the Moffat years either. Smith was the man though and when he got to run in stand-alone stories he was magic, weird head and all. The Doctor’s Wife is my all time favourite episode, so I’m forgiving towards the Moffat era.

Chinballs made me lol
