Something was missing

Firstly I hate to be pessimistic and I have found over the years people looking for things to complain about in the show, looking for flaws, criticising everything and wanting the show to be what they want. However something seemed missing in the first episode.

Now firstly, I really liked Jodie's doctor and felt that's the one thing the episode did right. I also liked how they didn't make it much of an issue and go on about the change too much. I was slightly worried how they would approach the change - it would be odd to ignore it, it's historical but you can't just keep bringing it up. But it felt right, like just another regeneration, like it had happened before. I wasn't sure about the doctor suddenly able to make a sonic from random objects, but then there was some alien tech there to and that wasn't really a big deal.

For me the episode just didn't feel very doctor whoish and I kind of feel like if you removed the doctor it would just be a bog standard sc-fi show. Normally with who, I feel that even when the doctor isn't about you can tell it's doctor who, it has a look and feel to it, and it seemed missing.

Maybe this is partly due to everything being new - we had a new composer and no opening, no tardis etc. Obviously its only a first episode, and the story is always basic, but I still felt that something was missing. Eleventh hour felt very doctor who, and the plot was quite good. I suppose it had only Amy as the main assistant while as we had a new team to have to get to know, stopping us focusing as much on the doctor and the threat. The threat felt like terminator meets predator with next week looking like star wars.

Obviously I'm excited for whats to come and glad we haven't been given too many spoilers. I'm sure I saw a little directness in the doctor in the train scene and wonder if this doctor will be quirky at times but straight to the point sometimes too which could be interesting.

Only have a moment now, but...

I really liked how they handled the discovery of the change in sex. One moment of recognition, then it was forgotten about until the crisis was over, and a change of clothing became necessary.
